Could too small of a habitat cause my bunny to have behavior issues? His cage is too small, I know it is, could this cause behavior issues? We thought the cage was big enough as new bunny owners and we will be making him a bunny condo very soon. I just wonder if his cage being too small could be the reason he is misbehaving?

Is he neutered? Most behavioral issues are caused by hormones. Can you describe how he’s misbehaving? Can you also tell us how often you let him out of his cage to run around? Because that could be an issue too.

Yes, he is neutered. I had him neutered mid-September. He is chewing up his litter pan that is inside of his cage, aggressively scratching at my husband’s clothing and biting it, peeing on the couch which he never did before, etc. He’s a great bunny, I am just worried as to why he is becoming aggressive with his “grooming” and why he randomly chooses to pee on the couch. He has just recently started chewing up his litter pan. He is allowed out of his cage while we are home, my husband typically gets home from work around 2:30pm and lets him out until around 10:00pm when we go take showers and go to bed.

It sounds like he has a good amount of time out of his cage but even so, his cage still needs to be adequately sized so that he can run and play in it. If he is unable to do so, he’s probably incredibly bored and frustrated (and therefore misbehaves) If you’re not able to build him a bigger enclosure right away, what about adding a pen around his cage to give him more space whilst you’re at work?

I agree with Sarah, but I also want to add that it can take a few months for hormones to die down. Some bunnies go through a post neuter craze where they get worse and then mellow out.

Do they made pens tall enough that he can’t jump over them?

Probably not BUT you could make a roof – either with nic grids or a blanket clipped in place Or even a sheet of plastic.
