the hay from bb is good with 2 little buns it lasted 2 months

I have a feed store that lets me scoop up the loose hay I get a bag of it lasts a long time.  Can you find a place that you could do that with.   Sure saves lots of  $.

Im thinking about getting the little bales from BB as well. Oxbow hay is costing me now! I hope someone will say it lasted a long time and their buns loved it lol

Edit: And for storage i have a big storage tub that I drilled a bunch of holes in the lid and some on the sides. I can close it so my other animals cant get to it, but its properly ventalated as well! Works great for me!

My rabbits really like the BB hay, I placed my first order a few weeks ago.  I have tried all different types of hay with them- Oxbow, Kaytee, Zupreem, etc.  I usually offer a variety of the timothy/grass hays and I have no problem switching brands.  Which does not surprise me because I have noticed a big difference with Oxbow and Zupreem hays most specifically (probably because I bought those more often)- sometimes the timothy is softer like a second cut and sometimes it is super pokey and “stick-like” (for lack of a better texture description)- same brand, same hay- but variable per bag.

So I bought a bale of hay- a big huge bale.  I had to figure out how to store it off the floor in the garage- since hubby refuses to consider storing it in the basement (but I can just see the cats scarfing and barfing the hay if they ever get the chance).  I used a big cotton blanket and lined the wheelbarrow, put the hay bale in and then covered it with the rest of the blanket.  It is wintertime anyway, so no use for the wheelbarrow.  My husband wanted to put it on a couple of 2 x 4’s- but I thought that would be too close to the garage floor and melting snow.  Of course now I have to vacuum the hay out of my trunk, even though I had a blanket in there I still got hay all over my car trunk.

But even though I bought a huge bale- I still am going to use “premium” hay to mix in to keep it more palatable and add variety.

I am a firm believer in feeding animals a healthy variety- cats, dogs and bunnies.  My dogs and cats always eat the same brand food and quality treats, but I will give my dogs limited table scraps.  I would rather have them be used to it and have their tummies handle it- then have blow out diah when they sneak something.  And the cats always get the same food- Science Diet for fat cats (hairball light) but I buy other premium foods in small bags such as Pro Plan, Nutro, etc to give as treats.  And they will eat the other kibble as though it is a treat.  Cats can be so finicky that I did not want to program my cats to eat one food and one food only.  And most of the soft cat treats are not healthy anyway.  So I figure the same with the bunnies- I don’t want them to freak out is Company XX no longer makes, or I can no longer get a certain hay.  But their pellets I am strict about- Oxbow only.

I get HUGE bales of hay from the HRS shelter. They get it from a local farmer.
I keep it in 2 really big rubber maid containers. I poked a bunch of holes in the containers with a pair of scissors – so the hay gets air. i have no problem with mold.
Cost is $30 and it lasts 3 – 4 months.

If you look for a “feed” store in your area – they might sell partial bales (1/4 or 1/2) of hay.

I also get smaller bales of hay from BB as “treat” hay for my buns – I just keep it in the paper bag it comes in.

ill have to call my feed stores and see what they say. Its just costing me mega bucks when were going throguh a bag of $12 hay a week… I have thought about getting a bale here and there but worry about it getting old or if the strands are going to be too big. Ill give them a call and see if I can buy a half bale at a time or something.

                  Thanks guys!

the BB hay is awesome, but i believe they are mini-bales. i think they are about the same size as the large bag of Oxbow (40 oz). so i’m not sure with shipping how much you’d actually save money-wise. if you want you could email BinkyBunny directly and find out from her how that might compare.

i just bought hay this weekend and the store was out of the Oxbow timothy 40 oz bags, so i bought the orchard big bag instead. silly me, i’m worried my buns might not approve since it wasn’t their usual. they get different types of hay as a treat sometimes, but never as their only hay, i always mix it in with timothy. well, i filled their container, they went NUTS! i’m gonna have to buy some timothy next week when the store restocks to start mixing it in or else they’ll probably poo-poo it when it buy it again.

We get the big bags of Kaytee timothy hay..they are 96 oz for 14.99.  We’ve always had really good luck with those big bags..lots of nice long strands.  The smaller bags don’t have as nice hay since they’re smaller they seem t use the smaller (aka super tiny and kinda dusty) strands of hay.  So I get the big bag of Kaytee timothy and that lasts me for 2 weeks.  I then get little bags of other stuff to mix with it..mine like brome and orchard the best.

I might start looking for big bales though…I could keep it in my storage/laundry room which is technically outside..it’s a room but it’s not accessible from inside the house.  You have to go out the back door and then into that room….so it wouldn’t bother anyone’s allergies having a big bale of hay sitting there but it’d be protected from the elements.  There’s a lot of horses around here so I bet I could find some somewhere..I just worry about the quality of it and I’d be worried there was mold in them..  I’m going to make them some hay racks out of some bent in half NIC grids though so that teh hay isn’t sitting in their litter boxes and less will go to waste..that’s tonight’s project…was going to be last night’s project but then the Drue emergency happened and hay racks got put on hold!
