Sluggish after her Spay

Jessica got spayed on Friday!!!!  YEAH!!!!

She came home Friday night and was back at the vet on Saturday.  She didn’t eat much during the night on Friday.  I took her back to the vet on Saturday…they gave her a fluid hunchback and showed me how to syringe feed her babyfood.  She was given 4 days worth of pain meds, which ran out today.

I’ve been syringe feeding her daily w/ number of feedings needed decreasing daily.  On Sat., she was fed 4 x’s at home and once at the vet.  On Sunday, I fed her 3x’s .  Monday only 2x’s and today likely only once this evening.

She has been pooping and peeing…atleast more so than Saturday.  However, she tends to sleep in her litterbox.  She’s on cage rest until Friday, but I was told she could free roam up to an hour a day.  She seldom wants to come out of her cage.  She did last night. 

My vet also informed me that she’s gotten a little tubby, so I need to decrease her carrots, raisins, and seeds.  However, until she is eating more regularly, I’m feeding her whatever she will eat.  Any suggestions on when she will be feeling back to her regular self?  Also, Oreo is staying w/ my neighbors.  I thought it was too much for Jess so the neighbors agreed to take Oreo until we go back to school 7/2.

Hi! I’m glad that Jessica was spayed – it’s harder for females to recover so it takes them a few more days to get back to normal. Has she been eating anything on her own? I have the best luck with getting girls to eat cilantro and parsley after their spay, especially if I break the stems in half. I would say that today or tomorrow she should be eating on her own and not require the syringe feedings as much, thought it could even take a couple more days for her to get up and move around a lot.

The girls that I have gotten spayed before have not had pain meds – so perhaps those were making her a bit more sluggish than normal as well – so you might see even more improvement today. I noticed that after a spay/neuter lots of bunnies sleep in their box. I think it may be partially because that hay might be comfier on their under-parts when they are healing, and also because sometimes it hurts them to jump in and out of the litterbox, so they figure, might as well stay in!!

Jess started eating on her own yesterday…so I didn’t have to syringe feed her.  She’s been eating seeds, craisins, carrots, kale, parsley and cilantro on her own.   She hasn’t been eating her hay or pellets much.

She still spends most of her time in her litterbox.  She seems to get into a little bunny meatloaf position and hunker down for nap time.  We’ve been having a heatwave, so the air has been on all the time.  She doesn’t have much desire to leave her cage.  Yesterday, we put her up on the couch w/ us, so we could get some pets in.

I’m trying not to concern myself w/ her diet at this time (i.e. vet says she’s a chunky monkey and needs to lose weight).  I just want her to eat regularly.  We are going out of town this weekend for a wedding, so we have a neighbor and a pet sitter coming in over the weekend to keep an eye on her and the cats.

I’d recommend trying to get her to eat some hay, even stick the end of it in her mouth if you have too so she’ll start munching on it, the reason being that even though she is eating, a steady diet of treats and veg but no hay could cause some digestive upset, and if you are going out of town you’ll definitely want her to be eating hay while you’re gone. I’d definitely for the next couple days try to only give a teeeny bit of treats, in addition to her cilantro and parsley, she’ll probably also not eating her hay because she’s getting all those treats! You’ll really want to make sure she’s eating hay before you leave, and then work on her diet when you get back, you don’t want to her to get too big!! That could sause some big health problems down the road…but its not to hard to cut out the treats
