Slippery floors

The room i let my rabbit out for playtime has hardwood floors so he has little to no traction. I tried puting rugs down but he just digs them up and pees on them. I was wondering if there is something i could use that would give him traction, he couldn’t dig up and would be easy to clean? And what other people who have similar problems are using, thanks!

I use childrens interlocking play mats, they look adorable and are very soft and their feet and give mine the right amount of traction required for binkying!

I don’t use them in their cage, or while unsupervised, mine have never expressed any interest in chewing them (despite Yumi chewing everything else in the world) They can always be covered with fleece if digging is an issue(mine dont like to dig on it-love to dig the carpet around it though.)
They are great to clean up(designed for children)
I find them really handy to have !

Yes, i think theyd be a good solution for you also. If you cover the edges somehow (a wood frame?) he may not take to chewing them.

I have always used fleece or memory foam mats.

I would use something like fleece. That’s what I use for my rabbits and it works great!

Fleece, children’s mats, foam excersice mats with fleece on top of them all work quite well.

They do get used to hardwood floors too. Our whole house is hardwood floors, and the first month was a difficult adjustment, but after that it really doesn’t seem to bother Silas at all anymore.

Hi, my bun has interlocking play mats and fleece blankets for the xpen, and the rest of our apartment is hardwood floor. Sometimes she forgets that and she will slide when she is stretching her feet kick out from under her, but for the most part she has adjusted nicely. We have a runner for her and an area rug, and she knows to binky on these rugs Sometimes when she gets excited she’ll slide on the floor for a bit after a run (almost like a car drifting haha), but I think she finds this fun – or at least, it doesn’t seem to bother her.

Zou discovered only after 18 months that she can actually walk on tiles…
But i must admit i only see binkies on the bunny rug where she can have traction (and a sage landing) i suppose….

Lol, Vienna! Licorice didn’t take long at all with tiles. Winter has yet to be off carpet except in bonding sessions in which she slip-hops.

My bunny destroys fleece and yoga mats, so I use rugs. I have a big area rug for my living room and 4 long runners that I lay out specifically for them. I think mine are made from tightly woven jute or sisal? I also bought a bunch of carpet tiles from habitat for humanity. These are rubber backed and tightly woven (usually), so they hold up really well.

My entire apartment has glossy floor tiles, but Chewie races like a pro on them. Yes he slides when stretching and drifts adorably from time to time, but he does his binkies and zoomies on the rugs and love to do dramatic flops on the tiles. So yes. They adapt. They’re awesome that way.

Haha, that sounds adorable! My rabbit Penelope is just like that, but Barnaby refuses to cross slippery floors even if his litterbox/food are on the other side. He will inch along them in there is a wall, but hates them even after years.

I love the idea of foam mats especially for rabbits who tend to suffer from sore hocks, the childrens foam puzzle play mats and then put some fleeces over them and youre done! However, if your looking for something more long term that you can leave down a lot more, is easy to clean and they cant dig up, you can get these rubber stable mats for horses. They are too heavy for bunnies to dig up or mess around with and they are super easy to clean, you can stick a blanket on top and it gives them a bit of grip but it isnt too hard on their hocks or feet. The only downside is they can tend to be a bit expensive but those are usually the ones with extra grip on top for horses, you can get smooth ones and they are a bit cheaper. They’re usually quite large and rectangular but I’m sure you can get them in other sizes.

i have two bunnies living on hardwood floors (not polished but slippery nonetheless!) … i know this is a couple of months old now but i wanted to reply as i just found the solution to my identical problem and i wanted to share with you all in case it helps you out!! 

note – i know some of your solutions are great and will work great for some, like carpet squares/rubber stable mats/rubbing matting, but not only am i a huge perfectionist about my home and the way it looks (i wish i wasn’t, it’s a burden!!), my bunnies will chew carpet, yoga mats, anything! i’ve tried so many options in my quest for non-slip floor that isn’t completely hideous  

i have always used rugs, which they love to tear to pieces, dig and shred… i’m not sure how much i’ve spent on rugs over the last four years!! they also like to pee on them, and they shed all over them, they are always covered in stains from treats like strawberries or from the greens i give them and they are nearly impossible to clean and hoover. they are also slippy without underlays and my bunnies still seem to be dubious about running and binkying on them in case they move… 

SOOOOOO i was in an arts supply store the other day and they had HUGE rolls of canvas, the kind painters buy in bulk to stretch over frames. i mean this roll was 3 metres wide and you could buy the length by the metre. i bought 3m x 1.5 of the heaviest (15oz raw duck cotton) for £12!!! it was so cheap. 

was a bit dubious but i lay it down across the floor of the whole room, weighed down the edges with a few of their wooden hideaways and tunnels and they were charging around and binkying, it was so cute and amazing!

not only this but they haven’t dug, chewed, peed, or stained it yet. it’s a dream to clean because the surface is totally non-grippy and so far i’ve just swept it with a broom no problem! it would be fine to go in the washing machine too in the future with some minor shrinkage (according to the sales guy) 

so VOILA! just wanted to share in case you were in a similar situation. they love it because it gives them just enough grip and i love it because it’s cream and i can clean it!
