Sleeps in his litter tray….?!

So Billy has now deserted his fantastic earlier behaviour of using his litter tray and decided it makes a nice bed…

I have tried scooping his poop into the tray to make him realise what its for… but he’ll still go and sleep in it!

When i first had him he automatically used to urinate in it, now he does that elsewhere.

I think its started when i put some woodchips in the litter tray so it was easier to clean.

Any advice??!!

He does however spend most of his time laying here… like this…. is this normal?

What type of wood chips are you using?  I would try some other type litter and see if he returns to using it. Do you line his habitat with anything? Shavings, chips, newspaper, towels etc? Sometimes it’s better to leave the floor bare of absorbant materials and only have litter/bedding in the box.

Hi Jerseygirl. I used to use a more expensive bedding throughout his habitat… would have no idea what its called – which absorbs odours etc. Now i use woodshavings and hay throughout. I used to you loads, then figured it was way too much, so now a thin layer of wood shavings and random bits of hay.

Perhaps i’ll try what you are suggesting and leave his floor bare and put the woods shavings etc in his box. Thanks a lot!

Yes, that helps define the area of where to toilet. It also makes it loads easier for you to clean up. Avoid using pine and cedar as they are not good for their health.

I noticed you mentioned he’s about 4 months in another thread. At this age he’s entered puberty and their litter habits can worsen. Having a rabbit neutered will help with long term good litter habits, reduces the odour and lessens other hormonal behaviours.

Sleeping in the litter box is normal. Wooly does it all the time. Then again, he often times doesn’t care if there is poo and pee in there with him either. Gross bunny.

My Chacha bun has flopped into her litter box just once. Otherwise, it is just the poop place.

Thane started sleeping in his litter tray when I changed it to CareFresh. Like the other guys said, neutering and ONLY having bedding in the litter tray helps a BUNCH!

My bunny slept in her litterbox all the time when she was a baby (see photo). Now she only does it after it’s been freshly cleaned.

Rufus sleeps in his on a regular base and if I am slow with cleaning it i come home to find that he has removed all the litter so he can sleep in it!

Awwww – they do look cte in their trays lol.

BTW – i took your advice, put the bedding in his tray only and just like magic… he immediately started urinating in his tray only and as days have gone on, he does more and more poop in his tray!! Its amazing…. (im easily pleased). Now he only goes to the toilet rarely outside his tray amd he never urinates outside it – my life and cleaning out his home has become 100% easier!! Thanks a lot!! x
