Just noticed that my 7 m.o. lionhead, Pepper, was incredibly skinny the other night. His appetite seemed well and even though I was gone over the weekend mom said he ate heartily. Even last night he was chowing down like a champ. Today he hasn’t been as enthusiastic for hay or pellets, although he ate the veggies I gave him. Also gave him a teaspoon of rolled oats/warm water mush to at least fill his belly.

It’s so weird cos I feel like I should have noticed this sooner since I’m handling him all the time. He’s always been kind of the runt but his boniness worries me. Left an email with the exotic vet and plan on getting him an appointment first thing in the morning. Originally came to these forums looking for fattening ideas, but now I’m hoping that it’s nothing serious…

        Please send good vibes!

Ps. Don’t be hard on yourself, it’s sometimes hard to notice things when you are around them all the time. You are doing the right thing, getting in touch with the vet as soon as you noticed that something was not right.

Thanks mucho. Fed him another big helping of mixed veggies this evening since he still likes chowing down on that. He’s kind of mellow, which isn’t his usual spunky self. On the other hand I’m glad he’s still eating, otherwise we’d have bigger problems. I’m trying a new vet recommended by a friend who also has a bunny… the prices for my local vet are a bit steep. Kinda wish I had a better scale so I can monitor his weight.

Ahh well, guess it’s wait and see until the morning.

If he’s eating veggies but not hay, you may want to get his teeth checked, as hay is harder for them to chew than nice juicy veggies when their teeth hurt.

Thanks for the info Monkeybun, I’ll keep that in mind when I take him in. Caught him twice eating pellets so at least he’s keeping up with the munching! Hopping about the cage more too.

Is he still growing? I’m just wondering if he hasn’t reached full adulthood yet, he may be a little longer which could give the appearance of being skinny.
It’s excellent that you are seeing a new vet who is good with rabbits. If he was a runt he may have some subtle issues internally that a good vet can keep well under control for you.

Try costco for a better scale if you can-food scale  . Good your seeing a vet=best to rule out anything medical right away. Don’t blame yourself-lionheads are so fluffy it’s hard to see how big (or small) they are! Keep us posted!
