› FORUM › THE LOUNGE › Situation with Bindi- Vibes Needed Please
Bindi went in for what seemed like was going to be a routine dental (molar trim) Tuesday. I got a call from the vet there was a situation. There was a point so sharp it caused an ulcer under his tongue and it was so bad about 1/3 of his tongue had to be removed and stitched up. My heart totally dropped to hear this. She’s never seen this happen before and has been treating bunnies for many years. I feel just awful. He was not showing any signs of pain, reduced appetite or anything unusual that would have indicated how bad the situation was. He gets his teeth done 3-4 times a year and we were pretty much on schedule. He’s been at the vet ever since. I visited everyday and he seems in pretty good spirits. Eating (selectively) and quite active. The vet was surprised by how active he’s being. He hopped all around the visiting room like nothing was wrong. I’m bringing him home today but he’s going to need lots of TLC. We need to do Sub Q Fluids 2x daily as she’s concerned about his ability to drink properly.
My poor little teddy bear. He’s been through so much. But I know how tough he is. He’s come through so many health issues. You regulars here know all about it. He’s a trooper. If any bunny can get through this, it’s him.
Please send us lots of vibes and prayers.
Yesterday,
Poor fellow. Lots of vibes.
Oh poor thing! He will be in my prayers!! Yup, these darned bunnies don’t let us know they are in trouble. Thank goodness you stayed with the schedule, though, for the teeth!! I can’t imagine his poor tongue. Sounds like your vet is really on the ball though, thank goodness.
((((Vibes)))) For getting better soon!! Get well soon Bindi!! ![]()
Poor Bindi! Hopefully he’ll be able to learn to drink ok on his own before too long. The fighters have a way about getting what they want!
{{{{{{Bindi}}}}}}
Oh LPT I’m so sorry darling Bindi has been having such troubles.
You and he will be in my thoughts and prayers for speedy healing and complete recovery from this latest ordeal. Poor smooshy bub, give him a huge cuddle from his Aunty Mary. (((((((((HUGS))))))))
I know he’s such a soldier but we can’t help but worry about him. So glad to hear he was up and about so soon after such major surgery. It’s about time for his almost-twin, Mimzy, to have his next dental too and I dread to do it.
Take care of yourselves and my love to all the family.
xx
Oh Bindi
He’s such a brave bunny
Thinking of you both
Oh Bindi…. Poor little boy. Sending lots of (((hugs))), (((vibes))), and bunny kisses to you both. Our smushy boy needs to get better!
Oh No!

Please don’t beat yourself up. How could you know! And imagine if he didn’t go for regular dentals and it went on longer.

Thanks everyone.
Thankfully, he seems completely normal appetite and personality/energy wise, etc. but we are very concerned about his ability to drink. We are doing Sub Q 2x day and he hasn’t touched his water bowl. Obviously he feels hydrated from the Subs but the vet is very concerned about him getting dehydrated. He’s taking his meds (antibiotic and pain) like a champ and being really good about the subs as well.
He’s so dirty, though. Poor guy. He’s going to have to learn to wash with his new tongue.
This has been an extremely stressful few days. He’s much more okay with things than I am.
I hadn’t thought about cleaning himself. While he’ll likely figure it out, he may need a little help.
I know he’s used to drinking from a bowl, but you may want to consider one of those Lixit no drip water bottles that uses a lever to dispense water. If the concern is his ability to cup his tongue to drink, this type of bottle may allow him to get water by just swallowing like he does food since he would just have to learn to push the lever to make the water flow (may get enough water in his mouth that he wouldn’t have to be able to cup his tongue). I’ve never tried one of these bottles but, in theory, it just might work for Bindi.
(((Vibes for Bindi)))
Poor guy has been through a lot. Keep us updated!
Oh no
poor bindi
hoping that he has a speedy recovery
it’s hard when they show NO signs of being hurt in anyway and then you find out something like this
strong bunnies
I am sorry I hadn’t been on. I hope he has a speedy recovery. (((((Vibes for sweet Bindi)))))
JR, I was thinking similarly. I didn’t know of the lever action bottles tho. That sounds like just the thing!
I had only thought of those automatic waterers (like Drs foster smith have) that have a stream and collection area. Probably more expensive and all for nought if a bunny doesn’t take to it. I guess the cats might use it afterwards.
I had seen a different “model”, but yes, same valve. I think its the same concept as one that used to be around (company went out of business) called something like water buddy. I’ve read that you have to show the bunny how the valve works. I’ve actually seen the Lixit with the valve in Petsmart and Tractor Supply and played around with it. I’ve never bought one because, well, I have Moshi and I could see him playing with the valve … At first glance I thought the valve looked like it would hurt, but its actually very smooth and rounded on the end.
Oh, and the valve is very easy to work — much easier than moving a water bottle ball.
My little miracle bunny helped me build a puzzle. We had a snow day today.

Poor Bindy. Prayers that he’ll learn to drink again.
Nice work on the castle Bindi!
Let us know if you try the Lixit bottle. It might take a little getting used to but I hope you find a solution.
The bright side is that he’s eating!
I’m going to to Petsmart and take a look if they have those bottles. I tried using a regular water bottle and smearing banana on it. He ate the banana off and drank a couple of drops that came off the bottle but seemed annoyed about it. He hasn’t used it since, I don’t think.
We might try cutting back on his fluids a bit. Maybe he’s not drinking because he just has no urge to drink since he’s getting the fluids? We will cut back a bit but I will keep a very close eye on his poos and make sure he does not get dehydrated.
We have a recheck on Thursday.
I hope you find it and hope it works.
I found these instructions for teaching how to drink from this bottle:
That is a nice puzzle. Good job, Bindi!
I’m still in shock that he didn’t show any signs of having an ulcer.
Bindi looks like a Snow Day kind of bunny in that picture! Feel better!!! I hope you find a good water bottle!
Thanks for the link, JackRabbit. I probably won’t be able to get out today to see if I can find one. We have a pretty big mess of snow here in the City.
I’m willing to try anything but I have my doubts about any water bottle. Bindi is not a guy that likes change. I tried getting him to drink from a water bottle when he had to wear his cone and that did not happen.
We need some ((((Drink Water))) vibes.
(((((((((DRINK WATER)))))))))
You can do it Bindi!
Poor guy, sending lots of positive vibes his way.
Maybe also feed him very very wet greens? After both of my bunnies got neutered/spayed I would feed them kale drenched in water, it would literally make a little puddle under the greens.
It’s so tough when they’re a prey animal and their instincts tell them to NOT show it when something is wrong.
((((((Drink some water sweet Bindi)))))))
Poor Bindi (please drink some water) {{{{{{{VIBES}}}}}}}}
(((((((((((WATER VIBES FOR BINDI))))))))))
Is he still eating cecals okay? What kind of greens is he eating, if any, because that can also make him less thirsty along with daily 2x sub q’s. Mimzy hardly drank any water at all for almost six months during his head tilt because I gave fluids and he ate a lot of greens every day since hay was unmanageable for him.
Is syringing him water an option or are you worried he may aspirate it? Maybe syringing will help him learn to use his tongue again.
So worried about your little guy and I know you must be too. (((((((((((((((Water drinking vibes)))))))))))))) and sending hugs. xx
((((WATER VIBES))))
He’s eating lots of wet greens. Romaine, dandelion, carrot tops and bok choy. He’s eating greens, hay and treats (even the hard Oxbow cookies) like normal. Just the drinking that is the issue.
We have a vet appointment this afternoon. I will let you know how it goes. Hopefully his ear infection has cleared up as well.
I hope your appointment goes well and starts drinking better soon!
Looking forward to hear how Bindi is doing. ![]()
((((more vibes))))
Let us know what the vet says. ![]()
I just tuned in to this. Prayers for Bindi! So sorry to hear about all this ![]()
Made out pretty good at the vet. She said the stitches and everything look good. No infection or anything. He’s down to Metacam 1x a day and done the oral Baytril. She suggested we cut down the fluids to 1x daily in hopes that convinces him to drink. Le’ts hope so. She’s thinking maybe he’s too hydrated because he’s been having some mushy poos. Mostly normal but a bunch of messy ones about once a day.
Was also happy to hear that his ears are no longer infected.
Glad that things are starting to look up for Bindi. ![]()
Sounds like a good visit at the vet.
Will continue sending vibes that once the fluids are down he’ll get drinking again.
Good news on the ear and the stitches. Getting the mouth to heal is a dicey business because it stays wet in there, no real aeration to speak of.
Lots of love to you and Bindi Loo.
xx
{{{ Good Vibes for Bindi }}}
Glad to hear he doesn’t have an infection and that things are brightening up. Brave little Canadian polar-bear, get well soon!!!
Just read this. I hope Bindy gets better soon. Lots of vibes for him and you LPT.
Little Canadian Polar Bear, lol…..he does remind me of a polar bear. His nickname (one of them) is The Bear.
He didn’t drink much at all but I know that he at least tried to drink last night because there was some pellet residue in his water dish this morning.
Attempted drinking is great!
Still rooting for our little polar bear (too cute!)
I’m glad he at least got something to drink.
Hopefully he continues to improve, quickly!

Lovin the nickname Bindi Bear!
Sounds like he’s doing a little better. =D
That’s a good sign! Go Bindi!! Drink that H2O!
How’s he doing today, LPT?
I was about to ask the same thing, How’s Bindi doing? ![]()
He seems to be doing okay. I stayed at my Mom’s with Everly last night. We had gone over and ended up getting snowed in there. I just got home this morning and his bowl is a little more than half full so he’s been drinking. Not sure how much he’s getting in and how much is getting on his face but I’m going to keep giving him fluids 1x a day until his vet appointment on Wednesday.
Big day today. Miss Everly is getting baptized.
Great that he’s drinking!!

Aww…congrats to Everly! How exciting!
Will there be pictures?
Scary that you got snowed in…yikes, I’d be frantic! 0_o
More vibes for Bindi to be drinking/eating better. How is he doing with washing up, any progress there?
Good luck vibes for his upcoming appointment. xx
Thanks everyone.
Mimz- Not scary for me. We are used to these storms. 3 snowstorms in 1 week. Eager for winter to be over. I would have been super upset if the buns were home alone but Ricky was home and I knew Bindi would be well cared for. He does seem cleaner so I think he’s either learning how to wash and/or eat without making such a mess.

She’s so cute!! ![]()
Glad to hear that Bindy is doing better.
Congratulations to Everly and her family!!
Oh LPT, how beautiful is Everly in her wee gown!
What a special day. <3
We just came off about two weeks of deep cold and snowstorms here, so I’ve been under some stress with that, which is why I mentioned how scary it is when the weather turns. Glad to hear the buns were with Ricky, I kind of figured so since you didn’t mention him being with you.
I still would be a bit on edge myself if I had to wait out a storm away from home, but glad to hear you were all safe.
I am glad to hear Bindi is doing better. Your daughter is so cute.
So happy Bindi is doing better.
Everly is looking so beautiful in her little gown. The funny thing is, on the day she was baptized, a little girl named Everly was also baptized at our church! Too funny! ![]()
Everly looks like a little princess!
How’s Bindi doing? ![]()
Bindi had another re-check last night. He’s lost weight. I need to monitor his weight weekly. I don’t understand how he is losing weight when he is eating the same.
His tongue is healed up really well. Vet says he may or may not be able to drink eventually on his own. She suggested a day I’m home to watch him, I skip a day of fluids and see if that entices him. Snow day today so I may do that.
I feel sad about my little guy. I don’t want him to have to get IV fluids every day. I just want him to be a normal bunny. And I feel bad, he tries so hard to clean himself. It’s hard for me to help him out because his fur is so super thick and long. But I’m thankful he’s such a trooper and still here with me.
LEL- Everly was a super unique name like 5 years ago when I thought of it! There was a special printout in the local newspaper where you could publish your 2014 baby’s picture and there were 3 Everly’s (including mine, but all spelled differently). I blame Channing Tatum. That’s what he named his baby and now it’s going to be like the “it” name. Jerk….![]()
Poor bindi
I’m glad that his tongue is healing up
but the poor little guy
Poor Bindi
What’s his food intake like now, LPT? Is he eliminating well? I found during Mimzy’s tilt he got very thin (to my eye anyway as I couldn’t weigh him, no scale here for that) but giving him pellets during his convalescence seemed to help. Of course if this is a food item that sparks Bindi’s ear infections that would probably be a no-no but even a small amount of the Oxbow pellets and herbs treats that BB sells was enough to keep Mimzy going and at least hold his weight until he was better able to eat.
I can imagine it is hard to know how to clean him.
I sure wish Olivia were willing to help out here, nothing beats another bunny tongue to take up the work of one that isn’t working as well as it used to. Fiver would wash Mimzy’s eyes for him during the times I’d put them together last March (while I was sick in bed with a bad kidney) and other than yanking on some of Mimzy’s crusties and making him flinch a bit, he was a very gentle nurse to him and it was so sweet to watch.
Keeping vibes and prayers going. Good luck with letting him try to drink on his own today. I can understand not wanting to keep giving sub q’s, it was hard enough for the short amount of time I had to do it with Mimzy. Once he gained enough sense of his surroundings again that he could squirm away it became impossible to do.
Thank God he was good about eating his greens, otherwise he would’ve been much worse off than he was.
Come on Bindi Loo…let’s get drinking! <3 xx
ETA: I sympathize on the frequency of baby names…my daughter got a lot of smart aleck comments about hers all the way through school. (eyeroll)
Poor Bindi!
Sending lots of ((((vibes)))) you and Bindi’s way! ![]()
Just checking in to see how Bindi is doing.
((((((Vibes)))))) xx
He’s doing okay. We skipped the fluids yesterday a.m. and I did see him drink after play time. He took a few sips and then washed his face. It was hard to tell how much he got in and how much dribbled out on his fur. By the evening, it didn’t look like he had drank any more so we decided to give him some fluids. I will try again in a few days, skipping again to see if he will drink. I’m not giving up! I know he can do it because he can eat his pellets even when they are pretty watery.
He’s honestly so good about the IV fluids. He really doesn’t seem to mind at all. He gets banana after.
So for now, just gonna keep trying to convince him to drink and monitor his weight once a week.
I will tell him you are all concerned and rooting for him to drink. ![]()
Just caught this thread. I am sorry about Bindi! Hope he feels better especially his little tongue.
Drink some more water Bindi!! ![]()
Poor little Bindi, he has been through so much! I bet he will get the hang of it, though. He’s a smart cookie. ![]()
Still rooting for Bindi <3
Up kind of late tonight, but just came to check in and leave some more vibes for Bindi.
xx
How’s Bindi doing LPT? ![]()
He’s doing the same. Weigh in tonight, he’s at 5lbs. About the same as when we were at the vet last. I’m going to weigh him once a week.
It’s good that you’re weighing him, so that you can know if he starts to gain/lose weight rapidly. ![]()
Could you flavor the water a bit to try to entice him?
I’ve tried Apple Juice but it doesn’t seem to interest him much. Might try pineapple. And I will be going this week to check out those water bottles you suggested, Jack Rabbit. It’s been so busy and stormy here these past few weeks.
LPT— I once added a tiny bit of grape juice into her water to try and make her drink… ![]()
I tried some pineapple this morning. And he did drink from the bowl twice but the amount hasn’t really gone down all day so I think that was it. He did have fluids this morning. So I know he CAN drink he just either doesn’t want to because it’s hard or uncomfortable or he doesn’t feel thirsty because of the fluids. I’m just scared to stop the fluids because I don’t want him having GI or other problems on top of all he’s been through. The vet was quite concerned that he doesn’t get dehydrated.
So I need some more vibes. I think he is depressed.
This past week, he’s just not acting himself when I let him out for run time. He’s not very interested in cuddles, which he loved so much before. He just wants to spend most of his time hiding behind the baby swing, either sitting or washing. Regular Bindi would spend most of his time flopped out on the floor and getting snuggles from me. I haven’t seen him flopped on the floor in weeks. I’m feeling really sad and concerned.
Vibes on the way ….. {{{{{Happy Bindi}}}}} and to you (((((Happy LPT)))))
((((((((((((Bindi)))))))))))))
Drink lots of water and cuddle with Momma!!!

LPT, as long as he tolerates it well, I’d push for more pain relief. What is he taking now? Maybe have a chat with your vet. If he’s hiding he may well be uncomfy.
Good to hear he’s washing though.
Sending more vibes your way ((((((((Bindi))))))) xx
{{{Bindi-Loo}}}
Here’s hoping he’ll come around to being his former snuggly self. Maybe he’s still wary because of the sub Q’s?
{{{ BINDI }}}
How is the little guy doing today? I hope he’s got a bit more of his spunk back!
No, he’s the same. He’s happy and seems like regular Bindi in his condo. He’s happy enough and hops out for out-time on his own. It’s just he acts so weird when he’s out in the living room.
I did give him a dose of Metacam today.
((((Bindi Bear!)))) ![]()
Hoping Bindi is doing better today.
xx
Thanks, Mimz. He’s the same. Did see a few flops the last few days, though while he’s out. And he still flops out in his condo. Drinking situation the same. He lost an ounce when I weighed him on Sunday. ![]()
Do you think the slight weight loss is water weight or not getting as many calories? I don’t know how he would do with oat hay tops but you could crush some on his pellets since they are nutritious and higher calorie than other hays.
Oh no, sending some (((vibes))) for you and Bindi! ![]()
Poor guy. I would have to agree with JR, the oat hay tops sound like a great idea if you can get ahold of some. If you feel comfortable, I have given bunnies a bit of alfalfa pellets/hay when they are not feeling well, they are a bit more fattening and usually get gobbled up.
(((((Bindi-Bear)))))
I will buy him some oat hay this week and get some oat tops my next BB order. Can`t buy them around here.
He`s also having extra cecals. I`m finding them all over his condo.
((((((Bindi-Loo))))))
I was at my sister’s helping with her daycare today and when I got home Ricky said that Bindi did a lot of zooming this morning during his play time. That made me happy to hear. Would have really made me smile to see!
Great news! Zoomies!! I’d have wanted to see it too =)
That’s great! ![]()
I am glad to hear that. It sounds like he is doing better!
Just checking in again to see if there’s been any further progress. Hope he is doing well and that you aren’t too frazzled with the poor weather! <3
Thanks for being so concerned about my little guy, Mimz.
No change really. Except he lost another ounce.
I e-mailed the vet to ask what I can do to help him regain the weight. She suggested I up his veggies and pellets very gradually. And she thinks that perhaps the lack of water is to blame, at least partially so if he loses any more we have to up his fluids as well. And I have some oat hay tops on the way from the BB store.
I’m not sure how sensitive Bindi’s stomach is, but I was given the suggestion to give Moxie some alfalfa hay/young rabbit pellets(because it’s an alfalfa hay base) to help Moxie gain weight, because she lost several ounces since her last vet visit. I was told to make sure she eats plenty of pellets, hay and greens.
I’m not sure if that helped or not, but just wanted to let you and Bindi know I’m still thinking of your guys and keeping up on this thread! ![]()
Thank you, Moxie.
The reason Bindi gets such a small amount of pellets is because he used to get gas and tummy upsets quite often. Reducing his pellets helped. I’m currently upping his pellets very gradually. Vet also suggests I try to get him to eat some Critical Care. I very much doubt he will but I’m going to try. Never giving up on my little guy! I bought a carrot mango juice at the grocery store today and am going to try to get him to drink by putting some in his water.
Poor guy, though, I’m 99% sure he has ANOTHER ear infection. HIs right ear is pretty yucky smelling. Baytril Otic again. Ear Vibes please!

(((((EAR VIBES FOR BINDI!!!!!!!)))))) Poor guy.
I really hope he gets better soon! It’s so stressful to have a sick bun/pet/family member. Sending ((((Vibes)))) for you as well!
(Moxie will drink more water if I put a little pineapple juice in it. Don’t know if that helps though.)
Thanks guys. He did eat some CC last night that I put on a plate with a tad of banana in it so I’m going to start giving him some daily. Hopefully, it will help.
Poor Bindi ((((((((((((( VIBES for Bindi ))))))))))))))) I really hope he gets better soon.
Eat your CC Bindi!!
(((Vibes)))
Ugh, you can’t catch a break with those ears!
More {{{vibes}}} !
Does he like pumpkin purée? That’s another good one to mix with CC. Or pop some fine hay in coffee grinder and mix pumpkin with that instead.
He’s doing really well with his CC. He’s getting about 4 servings a day and he’s gobbling it right up. Such a good boy.
Tonight is his Sunday night weigh in so we will see if he’s gained anything.
He has such long, thick fur that he’s having a hard time keeping his chin and chest area clean. He gets mad when I try to help him with a wet cloth and it really doesn’t help much anyways. I’m scared he gets sores from the moisture. I was thinking about clipping the fur in that area shorter. What do you think?
The vet’s assistant clipped Yohio’s fur around his nose and chin when he was in for his dental procedure, because I’d spilt CC on him and not managed to wipe it all off with a moist cloth – I didn’t want to torture him more than necessary, it was bad as it was with the force-feeding. So I guess you can clip the fur. Does he dip his little beard into the CC when he eats?
I’m glad to hear that he’s eating his CC like a good boy though!
Go Bindi !
I can imagine he does fuss when you try clean that area. Mine would too. A trim might help.
I find they cope better when you move the “dewlap” fur upward toward their heads. So in same direction as they would cleaning themselves.
The cornflour dry bath is another option. The cc may come out cleaner once dry also. Or does it become like glue? :/
Any weight gain?
I want Bindi to be a nicely rounded little polar bear. Go Bindi!
Ooh haven’t been on BB to see this earlier! Sending lots of good, healing vibes for everything! <3
{{{vibes}}}~~> Bindi <~~{{{vibes}}}
He gained back an ounce.
I’m, unfortunately, pretty convinced that he can’t drink on his own. Or at least that he can’t keep the liquid in. Maybe it’s just that he needs practice but I gave him some juice in his water and watched him drink. It looks like he’s getting most of it in, but then I ran my hand under his chin and it was super wet. ![]()
