Hi all, I’m writing in about my boy Salem, he’s a 2 year old neutered rex x lop who has been doing something that has caught my attention as I haven’t seen a rabbit do this before and cant seem to find anyone with a bun that does this either.

What he does is sits in his litter box (normal) but then he perches his two front feet on the side of the box and just sits there… sometimes for a few minutes sometimes for half an hour. He seems quite content. He’s been doing this for months and its multiple times a day. Nearly every time he’s in the litter box he’ll put his two front paws up on the sides and I cant figure out why he might be doing it. It’s been going on for months. It seems harmless enough but I’d love to know if anyone else’s rabbit does this or if there’s a reason for it.
I wouldn’t think much of this kind of thing but he does it so often and so routinely that I cant help but find it amusing.

I look forward to hearing your thoughts and if your buns do the same

Both of my buns lounge in their litter boxes all the time. It’s like their little hammock xD

Awww… that is rather cute! I have a bun that sometimes sits on the outside of the litterbox and rests her paws on the edge. She has a tendency to pull the hay out and eat it outside the box too.

Does he manage on the wood flooring okay? Maybe the box gives more traction??
I wonder if you’d put a rug down and a rolled up towel, whether he’d prop himself up with that? Perhaps there is something about that position he feels most comfortable in and the box helps support his weight?? IDK!

                Awww, what a cutie!

Many rabbits use their litter box as a multi-functional area. Our Breintje has turned it into his lounge area. Chilling, stretching out, eating hay and even munching down his treats. What’s the deal with men eating at the john…?

It also looks like your bun likes to sit a bit higher. Some rabbits love to climb and perch on things. Maybe he’d like a play area where he can make a lookout point? (BTW, rabbits aren’t exactly graceful and will jump down from high places. Make sure that he lands on something soft and non-slippery.)

I find Wick likes to perch a lot, so sleeping on higher ground, hopping to a slightly raised areas (boxes, tables) in order to groom, etc.. so he can see everything and keep tabs on his territory, haha.

Salem has pretty much the same fur pattern as my own Panda, right down to the mustache!

It’s rare to see my two buns just lounging in their litterbox when they’re not actually eating hay/doing their business, but it does occasionally happen – in fact, I saw Fernando (my REW) taking his ease in the box several days ago.

My buns spend a lot of time in their litter boxes. I put litter on one side and hay on the other. They love to “multi-task”.

                        Adorable bunny!

All the buns I’ve had have done this! It’s lmost as if they prefer the open box to a hutch ?

I wish he had the rex fur! His coat is more on the lop side and boy does he shed! I’ve never had any animal that sheds as much fur as he does  haha

My little girl does the same thing with her hay  she loves to make a mess lol

He does manage quite well on the wood flooring, although when we first got him as a baby he would refuse to walk on anything but carpet.
You could be onto something with the comfortableness and supporting his weight, he is a bit of a fatty at the moment
