Sick Easter Bunny

Familiar scenario again. Bindi is fine at breakfast and then by noon he is sitting in his house not wanting to eat. I gave him simethicone and waited…that didn’t help. I knew that if I got some fluids in him it would help but I didn’t have any on hand. I hated the idea of bugging my vet on Easter Sunday so I called the local 24 hour Emergency vet who’s seen my rabbits before and asked if they could supply me with some fluids that I could administer myself. She gave me some stupid story about why they don’t do that so I called my vet (she is so awesome she gives clients her cell for emergencies). I lucked out. She was on her way to the clinic anyways so she said bring him in and she’ll give him some motility drugs and fluids.

She gave him some Metacam and fluids and gave us fluids to administer every 4-5 hours. She said his fluids weren’t down too much, so I must have caught it at an early stage.

My vet is the absolute greatest! I was thinking, Oh boy, vet call on Easter Sunday…$$$$. She said “I am going to only charge the regular visit fee, not the emergency rate, since I was going to be here anyways.” What other vet would do that? She didn’t even charge me today, she said she’ll ring me in next time I’m in the office.

After I got Bindi home, he seemed a lot happier. He nibbled on some lettuce and had a few poos. Within a couple of hours, he ate some more lettuce and some hay. Just like the last 2 times it happened.

My vet wants me to take him off pellets complelety. He will be extremely disapproving! And she wants me to e-mail her a detailed list of what I feed and she will see if there is anyway to improve it and give more fibre since I deal with this failry often with Bindi and Stormy.

I’m at my Mom’s for an Easter visit and I’ll see how he is when I get home. He looked good when I left (otherwise I would never have left him alone.)

Awww.. I’m glad you were able to get him in to the vet and he is doing better. Poor little easter bunny! He probably just had a stressful night delivering easter baskets…

Glad he is fine. Lint is sensitive to pellets, and he does not get them as meals anymore, only individual pellets as treats. Ever since that he has not had any episodes. I hope Bindi’s new diet will prevent this trouble from returning.

Glad to report that Bindi is eating and pooping pretty good. He’s still not his active, noisy self again yet though.

That good! My rabbits are sensitive to pellets and I’ve stopped feeding them pellets completely. It was costing me too much in vet bills and stress, and (touch wood) they haven’t had any episodes since the pellets were removed.

I hate to think of the increased cost of veggies and hay if I remove pellets because I will have to feed them more to compensate (but if it saves vet bills I guess it’s worth it). Oh well, at least I will have a garden this summer and my vet suggested giving them fresh grass once in a while so that’s free too .
