My hubby is sick right now  bad cold and  pink eye .  We didn’t let the bunny out last night because we were at the dr’s and  just running around.  However we let shadow out tonight and now hubby is worried  that  he will pass his infections on to shadow. Can you pass on human sickness to your bunnyt?

I know it is a highly infectious disease through humans, but not sure with animals … Might have a Google!

Oh dear, so sorry your hubby is sick, perhaps the stress from finding a job weakened his immune system.  Plenty of happy get well wishes from Bonsai, Daffodil and myself!

FYI – A zoonotic disease is something that can be caught/transmitted from an animal. Is there anyone else that knows for certain??? I am thoroughly confused after a 1/2 hour of looking.

I generally thought human infections etc cannot be passed onto any pet.

And vice versa.

My understanding is that human infections cannot be passed to rabbits. Though there are some infections that rabbits have that can be passed to humans – but usually the human has to have a compromised immune system.

I have wondered if an illness, especially an airborne one, can be caught simultaneously by both species. You both catch that same virus at the same time, but don’t give it to each other. (Just fight over who gets the kleenex.)

Had to jump in on this; I’ve been home two days off work now sick-man oh man-even missed my volunteering tonight. Hopefully back at work (and back on binkybunny) tomorrow. Sorry guys-missed ya!!

Scooter here. It’s not likely that a rabbit will get a disease from a sick human. Contact your vet if you want to be sure.

As others have noted, bunnies can actually help with the recovery process. I’m finding this out myself…I got hammered with viral encephalitis on the 29th, and while I’ve been out of the hospital for a week now, I’ve been told in no uncertain terms not to go into work or do anything work-related until the end of next week. The bunnies have been great, although it took them a while to accept that the other big old bunny (Annette) would be the one giving them their breakfast banana! Normally they just glare at her in the morning and then ignore her.
