I am not happy with the cage I have Frappe in. It’s a typical pet store cage and I know he needs something bigger. He is not exactly litter trained yet, but I guess you could say he is “cage trained”. He uses the bathroom all over his cage (including his litter box), but he does not go on my carpet during his cage free time (several hours a day). I want to build him a new cage like some of the pics I’ve seen on BB, but I’ve noticed that most people don’t use Aspen chips or any kind of bedding throughout their cage. I’m wondering if the Aspen chips are encouraging him to use the bathroom everywhere in his cage and if he would be okay in a new set up without it. Has anybody else started out using bedding chips and then just stopped using them? Also, he is not neutered yet. I know litter training will be easier after that.

If there is something on the floor of his cage as well as in the litter box, he’ll go in the cage too. Thats why most people do not use any kind of bedding or shavings on the cage floor He’ll be better potty trained without it anywhere except his potty. Take them out, and he will adapt

Yup, you’ve got the right idea…the bedding all over the cage is probably just confusing for him, and he’d be perfectly fine without (not to mention that you wouldn’t have to buy any more!). Most of the time litter training is as much training for you as it is for the bunny – if you notice him using one particular corner oft he cage more, then just move the litter box over.
