I just got a new bunny, Echo, for my bunny Calypso. The bonding is going well, but I’m slightly concerned about Echo. The first few days I had her (it’s been a week), it was like she was on fast forward: so inquisitive and curious, running around, binkying, and climbing on everything. She would run away if I went to pick her up, but that’s pretty normal for a brand new bunny who hasn’t had time to get used to me.

Today, however, she has not come out of her cage once, despite the fact that Calypsohas been out and about and the cage has been left open. She has pretty much just stayed in one corner of the cage all day. She will groom Calypso and lie down with him when he goes near her, but other than that, she hasn’t done much all day.

I probably wouldn’t be concerned if she had been like this from the start, but up until today, she was like the Energizer bunny! Should I be concerned or is she just taking her time and chilling?

By the way, she is eating and pooping, and, as far as I can tell, appears relaxed. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I was going to ask you to check for eating, pooping and drinking water. Also, is it warm where she is? It does sound like there may be something wrong.
If she’s just hot, you could put a small bottle of frozen water in her cage and she can lie against it to cool down.
Keep a close watch on her intake and poops. You may need to call the vet if she doesn’t perk up by tomorrow morning.

Good news: Echo has perked up a bit. When I got home and let the buns out for a run around, she was waiting at the cage door for me. She was also playing with Calypso and exploring a bit, and she even climbed up to check me out a little bit. I’ll definitely keep an eye on her for the next little while, but hopefully it was just a weird day.

              Thank you!

She may have been uncomfortable from having gas.   That happens sometimes too.,    The previous advice about the eating pooping etc is good to follow too

Wow a loving concerned bunny parent.   Welcome Glad to hear from you.

Try feeding a treat. If she won’t take her fav food item (Easiest way to check health) then that’s probably a trip to the emergency vet.

If she does take the treat -thats a good sign!
However it could be a number of things as well. She’s warm; or tired from beating on the drum all the time (energizer bunny joke-I’m a dork), or just getting back to normal time=rabbit’s are generally active early morning and late evening. She may have been exploring all the time as it’s new territory but now she knows where things are and is snoozing in the afternoon-and will keep you up tonight until two am!

Thanks for all of the suggestions and ideas… I don’t know why she was so inactive that day, but she’s been her normal inquisitive self since then. Yay! And she’s finally figured out that there are two more levels to her cage! lol. I thought she would never realize that.

Also, things are going VERY well with her and Calypso… some grooming and snuggling going on. It’s so cute! And I know that Calypso is thrilled to have her to play with.

Thanks again for all your help… it’s wonderful to have a resource like this. Bunnies are such special little creatures, and it takes a certain type of person to appreciate their little quirks. It’s nice to have a place like this for bunny lovers like me (and you, I guess.) lol.

LOL I’ve been asking my boyfriend to bring his camera over, as mine is on the fritz, but he hasn’t remembered yet. I can’t wait to post pics! They look so sweet and funny together. Echo has the biggest feet and ears ever… my roommate asked me if she’d grow into them and all I could think was “I hope not!”. Calypso looks like a total hobo at this point in time… he refuses to let me brush his butt (in fact, he grunts and runs away like I’m trying to murder him, but whatever). So, he has those lovely tufts sticking off of his back end. Usually, he’ll let me pluck them out, but I guess I’ve approached him with the brush too many times in the past few days, because now he doesn’t trust me anywhere NEAR his butt. lol. Bunnies are too funny.
