So my cousin lives in Ohio and she adores her bunny.

And she’s going to basic training next week and obviously cant take her bunny.

She doesnt want to leave him with her mom because she would only feed it and have no other interaction with him.

So she wants to send him to me, in Oklahoma, but we aren’t entirely sure if it is safe for bunnies, and how to even do it logistically.

Has anyone done this before? would we call an airliner and they can make arrangments for us?

Thanks in advance guys… Any info at all is great!

Yeah that service looked pretty good but they only ship to and from like 5 major cities around the country… Ohio and Oklahoma aren’t ones of the five…

I hope you don’t mnd hearing my 2 cents worth……I would think the bunny would do better staying home for that week then undergo the stress of flying. Especially un escorted as it would definately be put in cargo then. Some have flown with the carrier under their feet so they can check in on their bunny. Sure, it might not get the interaction from your friends Mum and be a bit peeved by the weeks end, but being secure in it’s own environment and being feed and looked in on would be better. Buns don’t do well with big changes in their routines. For a week, I wouldn’t think it was worth it – though it would be nice for you to have buns company for a week

EDIT TO ADD: My apologies!  You didn’t say it was just a 1 week.  I gather your friend will be away for some time?   There is mention of a service in FAQ.  Their was also mention on the forums of another service that could carry rabbits but I don’t recall the name just now.  It was limited to where it flew though.  Hopefully someone can give specific advice.  Sorry about misunderstanding your question.

Welcome here! That’s nice of you to want to help your cousin, but I don’t think this is the solution.

Basic Training is for our military Jersey, I believe it’s several weeks… maybe 3 months long?

What is going to happen at the end of this, the bunny is going back home to her? I think the bun would be better off staying at home. Even with just getting food and basic care, the stress of a flight across the country and then back again is a lot for a relatively short time period. Someone would have to fly with the bunny (they cannot fly cargo), so there would be the additional cost of a person flying to and from 4 times.

Another (better) option would be to seek out a pet-sitter or boarder in Ohio for the few months. There are a couple HRS chapters in Ohio that have pet-sitting you can work out.

              Western Ohio: http://www.ohare.org/

              In the Columbus area: http://www.columbusrabbit.org/

Now even if she has to drive the bunny a couple hours to drop him off, it would be much better and less stressful than a flight.

Hey backflip! Any updates on what she ended up doing with the bun?

Yeah I was going to suggest you each drive towards each other and meet in a central point.  That way you can see your cousin b/f basic training & you can feel comfortable about monitoring bunny.  I have been on multiple sending ends of plane travel.  I’ve only sent animals w/ other people and had them stow them directly in the cabin.  I’ve sent about 2 cats out to Chgo & 2 cats out to San Diego….oops one out to Co.  Occassionally for friends or family I will do long distance re-homing.  Best of luck.  Also, I thank your cousin for her service!

Ahhh the airline is Pet Airways  for pets only and they are in the cabin.

Being bunny’s owner won’t be flying a regular passenger plane I believe bunny would end up in cargo.  Cargo is very loud.

Boot camp is about 3 months.  Maybe your friends case is different.

                    Best wishes for all
