shelby is getting spayed tomarrow im nervous

well i take miss shelby to the vet in the morning to get her spayed and im sOOOOOOOOOO nervous any thing i need to know about care after wards would b great to know she will have pain meds i have already asked  i have a box n her cage she likes to jump on shoud i take that out so she cant jump on it and possably tear her stitchs and i know i shouldnt let her out of her cage for 3 to 4 days anything else ?

If it’s a low box or a hidey box, I would leave it to keep things in her habitat familiar.  She’ll probably be pretty quite for the first day.  The article mentions giving acidophilus but this is a suggestion – not something that you have to do.  The main thing is be sure she eats before the operation and try getting her eating again as soon as she’ll allow it – likely by that evening or next morning.

Also make sure you stock up on her favorite veggies and pack some with you when you take her in-eating after surgery is important. So if it’s parsley she can’t resist-bring that

Monkey can’t get enough of the Metacam the doc gave her for after surgery pain meds. She goes bonkers over the stuff, almost like it was her raisins! Sooo easy to give it to er every day. She spent most of the day just flopped in ehr little bed when we brought her home, ate a couple leafs of lettuce and a raisin but thats about it. Didn’t get really eating until about 4 am, when she woke me up crunching on her pellets. Yes, I camped out on her doorstep that night lol. I took out any toys with pokey bits, like her willow rings that she’s chewed to bits, and her shredded paper just to be safe. She ahs since gotten all her stuff back as she has been a very good girl about the whole thing.

I know how you feel I remember when Molly had to be spayed. I was so nervous my stomach was aching. But she did fine. I didn’t bring anything, because I completely forgot If you have a stuffed toy, she is used to, maybe you can bring that with her so she has some things she recognises when she wakes up after the op.

Molly stayed the night at the vet, just because I wanted to be sure that she was well taken care of. But they didn’t give her any pain meds after the spay, which I was so upset about. So do make sure she gets some. Especially Metacam tastes sooo good that bunnies just want more of it.

shew sorry i just got her back this morning they kepy her over night n she is doign GREAT im so happy to have her back i cryed the whole way home after i droped her off i took her pillow she likes to lick and he bowls (she dosnt use a bottle) and her food and hay… i was told she needed more hay then pellets lol i think that means she is a little over weight :S oopse well she has been eating very good and took her meds good but she bit me a little wheni tryed to look at her belly but she looks wonderful and doin great thanks for all the prayers and support and info and shew i am SOOOOO glad she is home and safe

o and they told me cage rest for 10 days and they only gave pain meds for 3 days

shlbysmom – HUGS! I know the whole thing can be stressful. I am so glad she is recovering well. Good news!

I forgot which member had offered the Treat Trick to look at the incision, but it’s a great tip. Use a treat over your bunny’s head to get her to stand up on her back to feet and while she’s reaching up for a treat, you can check her belly for reddening or incision problems.

10 days is the longest time I’ve ever heard of so far. I am used to 4 – 7 days, but if your cage is rather small, you can ask your vet if it would be okay to have her in a pen after a few days so she can at least have some limited exercise. (be sure in the pen there is nothing in it she can jump on to).

10 days seems like a very long time- I know it’s a harder surgery for girls, but for my boy, I just kept him in a smaller pen for 2 days and gave him back his full pen after that. He didn’t get major run time until a week had gone by- but then again his regular pen is fairly large. I would judge her behavior and decide if it’s okay to let her out a little after a few days!

well her cage is HUGE its a dog cage tecnicly lol but its day 3 and she is doin great she is still kinda groggy and layn around she gets up n moves around some then lays around some more but she is eatn great and no diareea yet (i cant spell obiously sorry) hopefully she wont get any i have given her LOTS of hay tho thanks for all the support! ill keep u all posted

Oh good! Thanks for the update. i think you’ve mentioned the messy poop before…..the more hay less pellets advice will certainly help with that.
