my bun, Lola, had a tooth surgery this past summer and the vet was just evil. she charged us like crazy and even did another surgery without our permission. Anyway, we left her and am at another vet.

Lola has been grinding her mouth ever since  but not enough to worry me until now. When she is lying around, which is a lot lately, I go over an feel her head and it feels as if she is shivering or vibrating. She also makes a sound from her mouth and eats very little throughout the day. We have been feeding her her favorite greens but today she only nibbles a little and walks away. Her plate is still full by nighttime. I have also been noticing that her fur is clumping but I try to groom her and take out the little clumps. Should I take her to the vet? They wont be open until wednesday or thursday so is there anything i can do until then.

She looks soo sad and in pain…Help!

if she is not eating and looks in pain that is definitely a red flag. make an appt ASAP. I dont know whether or not it could be something else, but this sounds serious to me if she isint eating and acting strange. do your best to comfort her until you can get her in. Perhaps someone else will know more about what is going on, good luck!

Personally, I would take her to the vet ASAP as you are right grinding teeth can be a sign of pain (they can also do this from pleasure but in this case it doesn’t sound right) and since she is not eating like her usual self, it would be good to have her checked out and even given some pain meds. I am a bit concerned about the fur clumping as she may not be cleaning herself like most bunnies do and it could have some to do with her not eating much.  Have you offered her pellets softened in water (or Pedialyte) or tried chopping up her veggies? If it is her teeth, try to offer softened food, even some plain canned pumpkin (without the spices). What does her litterbox look like? If she is not pooing and her not eating is a concern. Do you have any critical care on hand? Is she drinking water? Have you been able to take a look at her mouth yourself? I am so sorry to hear about the vet who did this.  Hopefully all will be well and this new vet can help that happen.

I just wanted to add that I will be heading off to bed soon, but I did e-mail the other leaders about this discussion so they will hopefully be by shortly.  The important thing is to get her to eat, make sure she is comfortable and get her to the vet as soon as you can.

I say get her to a vet ASAP. If she is grinding her teeth in pain, and this doesn’t get under control soon, her digestive system could shut down or she could go into shock. Does your regular vet have an emergency referral? I know that sometimes on the Voice mail they offer emergency vet numbers.

What kind of sound is she making exactly – grinding?

Where is her fur clumping exactly? Around the mouth or ?? If so, this all sounds like it is teeth issues

Well, Her litter box has a lot of hay and soft-sorbent litter. She sometimes eats the hay when she is in there, her pellets arent that small or anything but she does have some cecils. We gave her a fresh plate of greens right now and she didnt run to them but she did eat, still not the usual amount, but she ate about half of the usual amount. The clumping of hair is under her neck, in that region and around her abdominal area on the sides. I try to gently pull the clumps off and any stray hair because i dont want her to ingest it. She doesnt like hay that much so unless i absolutely dont feed her anything but hay, she wont eat it or she’ll eat very little.

She had an absess tooth and the vet removed the tooth and put some sort of balls in her gums.  I have tried to look into her mouth and she wont let me.

it certainly sounds like she may be experiencing some pain and it’s likely related to her tooth issues. I would call a bunny savvy vet in the morning and try to get her in right away.

Definitely vet time especially with tooth abscess issues – these need to be watched very closely. It sounds like the vet put bicillin balls in Lola’s abscess to help fight further infection but she still needs some treatment. Please keep us updated on how she is doing.

Let us know what the vet says. It does sound though like she is feeling better but a trip to the vet is still a good idea.

Leo has terrible teeth and when he doesn’t eat as much as usual I get him to the vet ASAP.  He’s the primary reason I keep a food scale on hand.  If the food bowl still has pellets when I come home in the evening…I weigh them.  If anything it gives me peace of mind.  I also keep critical care, strawberry ensure, and baby food on hand…just in case.

My feeling is that teeth problems always haunt bunnies.  I do my best to be prepared for eating issues.  I have the scale to keep myself at ease, if I get suspicious of his food intake.

It’s good to hear that Lola is eating more, but still definately have her checked out by the vet to be sure there isn’t any underlying issue. You definately do not want an infection making its presence again. Most notably because an abcess doesn’t have far to travel to get to the brain. Please let us know how the visit goes and how things are faring.

It’s O.K., Lola sounds like she will be getting some first class care. Try not to worry and just know that she will be in good hands and it sounds like something that just needs a little treatment. I know it is very hard not to worry, especially after what was gone through at the other vets. Call your vet to check on her if you need to and ask if you can do that when you drop her off because you are worried about her. I’m sure they will understand. Of course, let us know how it goes.

Well, I know this sounds bad but I really dont mean it the way it sounds… Does anyone here have pet insurance because I am considering getting it for both my buns and only because the bills for surgery and stuff can stack up. Not for any other reason! If you do, please let me know because I am looking into VPI because that is the only insurance that covers rabbits that i can find and they can still see their vet. Let me know. I have no idea if this is a good decision. Cinnabon has no problems yet but Lola has had a few and I would rather pay $120 a year than $500. I can never put a price on my buns, I would pay till the end of the world but I am just a student so let me know.

                                        Hi,

I hope your bunny is ok! I just want to say that I have all my rabbits insured now after experiencing a 1,000 pound bill my bunny racked up in six months receiving dental treatment. Unfortunately I lost her during the process but would have paid that ten thousand times over to help her,  having insurance now gives me peace of mind with the bunnies I have. You must bear in mind though that they won’t cover existing conditions. From my experience, rabbits that you keep indoors you will notice have more health problems than those outside. Not that they are more sickly, it’s just that you notice subtle changes more that otherwise are generally missed.  I’m neurotic about mine, so if I notice anything out of the ordinary it’s off to the vet. Insurance makes it a whole lot easier and really it’s only the cost per month of maybe what you would spen on a night out with your friends! that’s how I look at it anyway 🙂

Well, the vet said that it was right to take her in because she has one tooth in the back of her mouth that was way overgrown. He said there is no infection or anything that needs treatment other then a trim. He did say that he wanted to extract the tooth but was worried he would break her jaw in the process so he just trimmed it and wanted to see her again in about two weeks to see the progress. Whew!

That’s great it wasn’t an infection and it was something the vet could take care of with not too much ordeal. Yikes another tooth extraction, just take it one exam at a time, I’m thinking that if it doesn’t grow too fast, the vet will just have you bring her in for regular trimmings in lieu of suggesting extraction. I hope all goes well for Lola and you too!

I’m glad you took her in then! Teeth problems can be so worrisome but at least you know what the problem is and what the signs are to take her in for treatment.

Continued vibes to Lola and keep us updated on her progress.
