Today, bowtie (my 2-3 year old bun whom I adopted a few weeks ago), was literally chasing her tail. I would put my hand down and she would just rub on my hand and go in circles. weird behavior, but still kinda cute. until I pick her up, to discover a itty bitty penis!  My pretty little girl is actaully a boy with a raging boner! arg. Was wondering if anyone else has had the ‘fun’ shock?

Hahaha, I personally haven’t, since I got leroy from the shelter and he was already neutered (and I sure hope the vet didnt mistake a uterus for testicles one they opened him up!!!) I know there are other people on this forum who have had that happen, so maybe they’ll see this topic and reply.

I do know it’s not uncommon. Boy bunny bits are hard to differentiate from girl bunny bits, even for people experienced with sexing bunnies. I think it’s more of a mental shock for the bunny slaves than it is for him/her =P If you really want to know for sure, take him/her to an experienced bunny vet. Can you feel testicles that have dropped? (I’m assuming he/she hasn’t been speutered since then the vet would have told you).

OH my surprise surprise.   Yes several people have been surprised when he is a she or she is a he.

Then the name has to change.

Did you adopt this rabbit from a rescue or humane society? Is he neutered?

I got her from a coworker who swears up and down that it was a girl. But an unspayed girl. I know shes been to the vet a few times for checkups with the previous owner. But it looks like I’ll be making a trip soon too. ;o)

Yeah, best to have the vet confirm the sex and get him/her altered too. Do you see any testicles? Many times those are hard to miss. Sometimes the rabbit does “suck” the testicles in though so even that is not always a way to tell.

yup. so just through observation I have determined my bunny is a male. He chased his tail long enough for him to get an erection and then frantically ran around me in circles licking any part of my skin that’s showing. After a few minutes of fun, he stopped, paused and then slowly hopped to a corner and flopped down. Typically guy.

Oops. =) That happened with Velvet (hence the girlish name. . . I’m pretty sure his manly pride has been hurt by that. . . ). The girl at the petstore told us Ruby is a girl and I tried to check myself, but she’s still really little and I can’t be sure. . .

Oh, by the way, does anyone know a way to tell the sex of a bunny that’s only about 6 months?

You should be able to sex a 6 month old rabbit. Basically when you check their private parts a male is an “O” shape and a female is more of a slit. Let me see if I can find an article that might help you.

                                Not uncommon-but in a three year old-yeah, that’s weird

Neuter is in order That’s better anyways-cheaper then a spay

hehe! It’s really common – people finding out he is a she and vice versa. Look on the bright side – the “2 sac looking things ” really are 2 sacs and not something more ominous!

At least the name of your bunny Bowtie, can be for a girlie bunny or a boy bunny.

Congrats… it’s a boy! This happen more than you think… I agree that it is of no bother to the bunny at all, it only throws the humans for a loop.

Hahaha, that happened to Karl (=Karla) as well. He was constantly humping his stuffed toy, and my mum kept asking us if we were really sure that it was a she. And of course I was! I kept telling her about dominant females And anyway, we got Karla from a shelter, so of course they would know the sex.

I did try once to stick a hand under the tail to feel if there was any testicles because my mum got to me…and well, I did feel something, but ignored it.

But then it was time for Karl(a)’s spay, and the vet looked at her/him, and then asked me if I really wanted to know the sex or not. At first, it was so strange because we had been living with this cute little female for 4 months, but after a while, it felt so much better that Karl(a) was a boy. It just made sense. Of course this little naughty bunny had to be a boy But my boyfriend did ask me at first if we could just keep it to ourselves and continue to call him Karla…but now we hardly remember having had a little girl.

And as K&K says: it is cheaper and easier to fix a male! So you were lucky

But bowtie doesn’t HUMP anything. ever. All he does is run around in circles, chasing his tail, and he gets a little bunny boner. Should I be concerned he’s been horny for an entire week, or is this normal behavior.

Aww…he loves you! Watch out he doesn’t start spraying you with urine. ;o) He’s probably not as hormonal as a younger teenager bun. Some bunnies remain humpy even after being altered – it just varies rabbit to rabbit.

I don’t think you need to be concerned – but his behavior will definitely subside after his neuter. It will also help prevent additional behavioral issues from coming up! I’ve worked with some un-neutered males before, and they definitely behaved a lot like Bowtie – he is probably also even more excited than normal since he has a new female friend to harass

Haha, oh goodness. I’m glad I never had this particular shock! Chubs was already neutered when we got him and we had vet papers to prove it. Then we got Comet at about 9 months old and it was very evident that he had boy bits!
