        Hello everyone,

With St. Patricks’ Day just around the corner I’ve been seeing a lot of Shamrock plants for sale. I know rabbit’s can have clover, so I was just wondering if that was really the same thing? Do you think it’d be safe for them to eat the shamrock plant? Anyone have any ideas, or links to info, let me know.

Ohh i will have to go to teh store to see this plant.  I have no idea about eating them though.  Do they have small pink flowers?  if so I feed them to mine.

OH there was this real neat  hibiscus plant.   It was a certain type that had really large flowers on it the size of a plate you eat on.  Shades of blue they were gorgeous I didn’t get one though. Hope fully this year they will come out again with them. Very unusual.

I tried looking up shamrock plant and didn’t see too many references too it, except that I saw one person with a SUPER extensive list of what bunnies can NOT eat and shamrock was listed, so I wouldn’t recommend trying it, just because there are so many safe options it probably isn’t worth the risk.

having worked at a garden center for a number of years, I would strongly recommend against it. Even if it is an edible clover, plants grown for ornament are not kept to the same standards as plants grown for consumption. Pesticides, fertilizers, etc… are NOT safe to consume that are used on these plants. Although it would be fun, I would stay away from any plant grown in the ornamental/gift section.

I have to agree with dlscanne- plants and flowers produced for retail sale are subject to be treated with chemicals to make them as appealing as possible for sale (fertilizers, pesticides, etc).

And especially since they are not produced with consumption in mind/focus- you would do best to not feed them.

BUT if it is something safe and you can grow it at home and not use any chemicals- like pet grass, herbs, etc then that is fine.  I have 2 rosebushes that we planted in our yard- and even though I have a “black” thumb (plants hate me) these roses thrive and I don’t treat them with anything- they are lucky to get overspray water from watering the lawn.  So I have offered the rose petals to my bunnies- but they really were not that interested.
