Hi all,
It’s been awhile since I’ve been on Binkybunny, been meaning to hop in!
Thought I’d tell about my Shamrock guy. He’s a 9-yrs and almost 11 months Palomino. In December he was peeing a lot outside the litterbox and weak on his legs (wobbly and would tip over trying to scratch his ears). I was very sad Dec. 10 when the vet said his bloodwork indicated some form of cancer.
Chemo was something that I cannot afford and Shammie doesn’t like to be messed with, it upsets him. So I brought him home with the idea of making him as comfortable and happy as possible. And, if it became necessary, having the vet assist him to cross the Rainbow Bridge.
Well, a few days passed, I felt in shock and depressed. But then I decided that wasn’t helping my boy any.
He needed me to be positive. I remember one of my other bunnies years ago who was sick – it might have been Annie, another Palomino, who had kidney disease. I had given her Poly-Vi-Sol infant vitamin drops.
So I went to Walgreen’s and got some of the drops – with iron, since Shammie’s blood tests indicated anemia. Each morning, I mix about half a teaspoonful of the vitamin drops with about a teaspoonful of baby food bananas. He licks it off this little spoon and within a few weeks I have noticed he is acting more like a normal bunny!
For his age, of course – he rests when he’s tired, and has to stretch his legs (I have Metacam if he needs it). But he doesn’t fall over, and he just seems more himself.
I’ve also made a point of giving him small amounts of antioxidant fruits such as a couple of blueberries or whatever I have on hand. His bunwife Frosty gets some too, naturally!
And just a healthy diet in general.
Now I’m not a vet, and I’m not trying to pretend to be one, or even saying I know for sure that giving Shamrock vitamin drops is what has caused him to feel better. But I figured, “can’t hurt, might help.” So I’m sharing this, for what it’s worth. I’m just happy to have my sweet boy doing well for however long God gives us together.
