My 2 year old rabbit Shadow recently passed on last week. I cannot get over his death, and I think it is my fault. We got him neutered a year ago so he should have lived longer. He had some matted fur, but my parents said that it was nothing. So I let it be, and several months passed by, then he died. I feel so guilty for his death, and I should have done something about his fur. He had had a perfect diet: timothy hay, pellets, a small portion of veggies once a week, and fresh water provided for him. His cage was cleaned daily. A week before he passed on, I noticed he was loosing weight. Me being stupid, thought he would gain back the weight easily. But he died, and now I’m not sure what to do. My heart is broken because I loved him so much and was sure I was taking care of him well. I thought he would stay with me much longer, and now I can’t imagine life without him. This summer we purchased a young rabbit, and now I’m afraid that she will pass on too. We are taking her to the vet, sometime soon, so we can be sure that she’s okay. I hope Shadow is in a better place. I just really miss him… =(

I’m so sorry. There is just no way to know how he died so don’t blame yourself and even sometimes when you do know, that doesn’t necessarily mean you can save your rabbit.

It’s a good idea to take your new baby in for a vet visit.

          Hugs to you.

Buns hide their illness very well because they are prey animals. They don’t want to be “caught sick”. You didn’t do anything wrong. By the time you noticed he was losing weight, it probably would have been too late anyways. Enjoy your new bunny, Shadow wants you to be happy.

So sorry for the loss of your friend. I know how heartbreaking it is to say goodbye, but he would not want you to be sad. I’m sure he is very thankful for all the love and great care you gave him. Most bunnies never get to know such love.

Sorry for his passing. Please don’t blame yourself. It is what we do, many of us, but all you can do is the best you can do at the time and not blame yourself for not knowing how to solve one of life’s mysteries. What counts is that Shadow knew your love and had a great life with you. My bunny Buddie passed 2 months after he was neutered and only lived 7 months so I know how unfair it feels to be without him.

I am so, so sorry about Shadow. You gave him lots of love during his life with you, and he loves you for that.

All I can say to take from this experience is to be aware that rabbits, as Beka said, do not communicate when something is bothering them, so watching for little signs of change is right. If you see that your present bunny, or your future bunnies, are acting funny, have something like matted fur from poos, or seem thinner, then ask your parents to allow you to take her to the vet to be checked. You may find yourself over-reacting to every little thing in the near future, but you’ll soon learn what is normal for a little one and what is not quite right. It’s not something any of us know naturally, and it is sad when you feel it was your fault. Believe me, it was not.
