On Thursday My Rabbit Buffy (The Pure White One In My Avatar) Got Speyed. I Check Her Scar Everyday To Make Sure That It Is Healing Properly And To See If There Is Any Sign Of Infection. I Checked Her Scar Today, Only To Find That It Has Split Right Open Revealing All Her Muscles. My Mum Has Taken Her To The Emergency Vet (I Am Only 13 So I Obviosly Couldn’t Take Her And I Can’t Go Because I Have To Look After Binky As He Has A Limp Because He Caught His Back Leg On Those Cages With The Plastic Bases And The Door That Comes Up Really High, It Has Been Checked By The Vet) I Am Really Worried, It Wasn’t Bleeding So It Musnt Have Happened Earlier And I Feel Really Bad Because I Didn’t Notice It Before. I Don’t Know What Caused It Either, I Have Seen Her Grooming Her Belly But I Don’t Know If She Was Picking It, And Binky Has Been Acting Really Strange Latley Because He Has Been Chassing Her Around And Biting Her Which Is Really Unusual Because They Are Normally The Best Of Friends So I Don’t Know If Binky Has Caused The Big Gaping Hole In Her Stomach. I Don’t Think Binky Is Chasing Buffy Because She Smells Like The Vet Because I Took Binky With Her When She Was Going To Get Speyed So That He Wouldn’t Turn On Her When She Come Back Because She Smelled Like The Vet And Also Because Usually Binky Is Lost Without Buffy, One Time I Left Binky In The Enclosure All By Himself For Ten Minutes While I Did My Monthly Check On Her And I Could Hear Binky Grunting And Squeeking As Soon As She Left. I Really Dont Know What Has Got Into Him. I Am Really Worried About Buffy For Obvious Reasons Do You Reckon She Will Be O.K.? And Can Anyone Explain Binky’s Starnge And Unusual Behaivour?

        Thanks Eriin

I hope she is going to be O.K. she is in the care of a vet now, hopefully there is no infection. What you may want to do it let her recover in her own single-floor cage without Binky. Provide some soft blankets or towels for resting on. Running around and hopping up and down levels will make the incision re-open, so can picking at it. What kind of stitches were used? Did the vet use surgical glue?

As for the nipping, he could be annoyed with her and trying to boss her around. Has Binky been fixed? Does this happen at any time in particular, say when they are being fed or given treats?

She has come back and had it re-joined with surgical stapels she has a dressing on it but she keeps picking it off, tomorrow morning we are going to take her down to the local vet to put a collar on it because she just won’t leave it alone. she is being kept in her own cage and me and my mum are taking it in turns to watch her to make sure she doesn’t pick it.

The emergency vet said we had caught her just in time because she had pulled the stitches in the skin but not the ones in her muscles so we were pretty lucky there.

Binky has been fixed, he was fixed before we got Buffy. He just randomly nips her and then runs after her.

No problem, I hope everything goes better tomorrow. I was going to suggest a collar since she will not leave it alone.  Did the vet prescribe any pain meds?

ooo my how scary, i am sending lots of good wishes her way.

We had a bunny with our rescue who pulled out her stitches three times. It was actually a good thing – since she was trying to tell us something was wrong. It turned out she had a serious infection that could have made her very ill if it hadn’t been caught. So, when she goes to the vet tomorrow, you might also have him or her look careful over the incision to ensure there’s no sign of infection, when you go to get the collar.

until you can get Buffy into the vet – you can wrap a dish towel around her whole middle and binding that with an elastic bandage wrapped snuggly over it. If she can breath normally, it isn’t too tight.

please let us know how she’s doing.

Wow, how scary! I am glad you caught it in time and your mom was able to get her to the vet asap. I sure hope she does not have an infection, but please be sure to mention to the vet what gravehearted has said about infection.

Regarding your other bunny – unless i misunderstood you, I read it as you took Binky with only when you were GOING to the vet, but did you bring him with when you were bringing Buffy back home?  On the way back would have been the way to go too because that’s when Buffy  wouldn’t have smelled like her – smelling like strangers hands, the meds, etc,etc that would have made her no longer smell like her. which would have caused him to lash out.

ALSO, there could have been a few other things going on. Sometimes a bunny will pick on another when one isn’t feeling well. Also, if Binky is in pain due to his foot and Buffy being in pain after surgery, either one of them could have become aggressive. So I would separate them, but allow them to be near each other, smell each other (but if they are going into full blown attack you want to keep them far enough away so they can’t bite each other through a pen/cage.

                      Keep us updated!

Scarlet Rose- There wasn’t any meds perscribed for Buffy although she had painkillers injected into her in the vet. There isn’t any sign of infection and I have done what you suggested about the dish towel and the bandage and she seems to be leaving it alone.

Binky Bunny – Binky stayed in the vet wiith Buffy when she was speyed, I have kept them seperate and I kept Buffy in my room because the vet said to keep and eye on her so that she doesn’t pick her stitches. I orrigionally put Buffy in the enclosure in her cage but Binky started stamping and boxing the cage the flicking his feet, I moved Buffy out to smelling distance but not seeing distance but he still carried on but he stopped when I took her out of the room completly.

oh my.  please don’t feel too bad that you didn’t catch it right away.  things can happen so quickly with buns… i’m just glad you had the good sense to check the incision and as soon as you noticed it, your bun got the medical attention she needed.  i think when i was 13, i wouldn’t have been able to deal with seeing that… i’m still a bit squeamish when it comes to incisions and stuff.  i have to “make” myself look.  please keep us updated.

Buffy is doing well and we have lots of snuugly and chewably things in her cage to keep her occupied so that she won’t chew her scar. So far she hasn’t chewed it and she has decided to have a bit of chill out time because as soon as she is better Binky will probably want to play and he is so big and rough and she is tiny and delicate so she doesn’t get much peace from Binky.

I’m so glad to hear she is doing better now! That must have been tough trying to get her to leave the incision alone, I know that when rabbits get determined to do something its really hard to keep them away from that I hope that she is 100% better very soon!

I’m so glad that your mom was able to help you out and get your bunnies to the ER vet.  I remember your original spay post and that you were able to bring them both to the vet, so they would have each other.  So are they both doing alright now?  I would definately put Buffy on cage rest (i.e. a single level cage for several days; w/ little activity).  Can you separate them both through a screen or grid or something?  Sometimes animals pick at scabs b/c they are uncomfortable and/or itchy.  I’m wondering if your vet could give you some Silvedine cream to put on her incision to keep it moist, so it doesn’t get too itchy?  Some people use neosporin, but I’ve heard differing opinions on Neosporin.

wow you are doing great being a bunny parent and checking stitches etc. and your Mom running them to the vet with you right away. I am guessing you are more relieved now. thats good. I am happy for you and buns that she will be ok now. of course keep an eye on her and you seem to be doing great with all that. I am proud of you I was very worried about her as all of us have been. I am glad you Mom seems to love your buns as much as you do thats great. smart Mom. Keep up the good work and keep us posted on how she is recovering there. Wow she left that dishtowel with the elastic alone wow. thats real good. I was thinking if she is that determined she would get it off.

Oh WHEW! I am glad she is doing better. You and your mom did a great job in making she was taken care of.

If you do go the neosporin route, be sure to use the one WITHOUT the pain meds.
