Sunday morning, I woke up to a funny rustling sound coming from the bathroom…turns out Peppy had sprung her cage overnight, found the value-pack of toilet paper sitting in the bathroom, and was having a ball ripping it apart .  This definitely isn’t the first time she’s escaped overnight; the thing that worries me the most about her running around unsupervised is that she’s a little carpet-eating monster.  How does everyone close the door of the NIC condos?  It’s been a good two months since I built it, but haven’t thought of a good way to keep the door closed yet.  It seems like a popular idea is binder clips; however, the smaller ones have a pretty weak hold across the two grids (at least compared to persistent bunny teeth), and either a bigger clip or a carabiner would probably work, but both those methods leave the door a little loose, which translates to lots and lots of noise when Peppy is rattling the cage at 8am every morning.  Putting her outside the bedroom isn’t an option either, since it’s a shared apartment.  Ideas?

We always used these 1″ spring clamps.  You can get them at Menards or any hardware store.  Here’s a picture of one.  The other thing I did before I go these and all the other clips I tried didn’t work was using some zipties to keep it closed.  Then in the morning I just cut them off.  Both ways he wasn’t able to make that rattle sound.  Even though he tried!

            I use these things: http://www.lowes.com/pd_63241-37672-701306_0__?newSearch=true&catalogId=10051&productId=3036811&UserSearch=snap+ring&Ntt=snap+ring&N=0&langId=-1&storeId=10151

Works good, although he will still “rattle” them when he wants out. But I’d rather hear rattiling than him escape

swivel snap bolts like they are on dog leashes work well too, you can buy them in small sizes at hardware stores

I use the swivel clips as well, you could also try a bigger binder clip, although none of that would stop the rattling.

You may have read on the forums about Scooter and Annette’s rabbit Aeryn? She’s an expert at breaking out. They now use a small padlock to secure the condo and can’t even leave the key in it. She’s been able to open the lock a couple times! lol
