Had the weirdest experience on Saturday night…twice I heard a scratching and then a scream.  I ran to the rabbits room both times to see if it was one of them but I just could not tell…I thought maybe one of my bladder sludge rabbits was having problems urinating but they seemed fine.  I also thought it was Pepe but the second scream he was in bed with me so I knew it wasn’t  him – I’ve heard him scream once when he got tangled up in some cords (a very good reason to rabbit proof your home!)

The second time my bird caused a ruckus too and there were feathers all over the floor in the morning.

The next morning I notice outside a deal little bird and wondered if perhaps it was him screaming.

But I think it might have actually been my bird screaming (I’ve never heard him scream like this though).  I know birds can get night fright which is why he gets a night light.  I also wondered if it was some hormonal type screaming from him.

Anyone else have birds that get night frights?

It hasn’t happened since but I sure didn’t get a good night’s sleep that night.

Oh how weird! I have no experience with birds, so I can’t help you out there. I know all about hopping out of bed tho to check out a weird bunny related noise… lol.

WOW I had no idea they had night terrors. I volunteered at our zoo and we had a cockateil there with behavior problems and man-when he’d get screaming!! I think I have hearing damage from him Glad it wasn’t the bunnies!

Every once in a while one of our parrots will have a “fit” in the middle of the night- yelling/squawking and flapping like crazy.  In one room we have 8 parrots total (African Grey timnehs, Senegal’s and a lovebird)- and by the time I flip the lights on they are all usually looking at me like “what, don’t you know it is the middle of the night?”.  So I am not even sure which bird or pair of birds is doing it- only that I can rule out the little lovebird as he can not make those noises.

Our pet parrot Kirby, also occasionally does this- he is on another level of the house- in the living room- and his never coincide with the other birds.

I don’t cover our birds at night as they were not covered before I got them anyway.

One time I had an explanation for it- there was an earthquake in a neighboring state but supposedly vibrations could still be felt in Michigan- but other than that one explanation I have a bird throw a “fit” in the middle of the night about every 3-4 months- which is not bad considering I have 9 birds total.

wow! I would be so creeped out. Do you have wildlife around your house? I grew up on a dirt road in Vermont and I can tell you baby foxes scream exactly like human children. What happens is the mother leaves them for a night, so they learn to hunt and fend for themselves. Part of weaning I guess. Its a horrible noise. Could that be it? Or coyotes getting a wild bunny? If you dont live in an area like that then I have no clue.

I heard Frank scream once when she was a baby, but she was fine. I ran in the room, her litter was everywhere and she was just sitting there, looking at me and screaming. I think she got tangled on her blanket in her cage and panicked.

Actually dlscanne, I had thought the same. Growing up, I had heard the baby fox noise once too. It’s seriously freaky. Even my Dad, born and bred on the land had not heard it before and took him a while to discern what it could be. There was talk of “the wail of the banshee” *rolls eyes*
Likely it was the bird. It’d give me shivers all the same!
