I woke up this morning to find Stormy laying flat on his side and not wanting to eat. I thought “oh, boy…here we go again”. Although usually when Stormy gets a tummy upset I just give him a dose or 2 of simethicone and then he’s fine. Not the case today. After 2 doses and several tummy massages he kept getting worse. Just laying in his house. He started shaking so hard his whole cage was shaking.
There was a snowstorm starting outside so I thought it best to take him asap before we couldn’t make it there. Thankfully, my vet said she could see him between surgeries so I could bring him right over. What a drive! The highway was hardly plowed and it was snowing really bad and my vet happens to be in the next town. Poor Storm, he was bouncing all over the place in his carrier.
When we got there, for some reason, she thought it might be something other than statis (internal abcesses or pneumonia) so she took him right away for xray. The xray turned out fine except his stomach was very large and there was some gas in the intestines. She said she couldn’t tell if it was a blockage or just statis. She gave him iv fluids and pain meds and a shot of something else but I’m not sure what it was, I was so stressed out and upset. She sent me home with fluids to do via butterfly catheter and some Critical Care.
Thankfully, by the time he was due to get some fluids, he had eaten some lettuce and pooed a little. Now I’m very relieved to report he ate his supper of green veggies and a bit of hay and had some normal poos.
I’m so glad because I really don’t think I could bring him back to the vet today no matter what because now it’s really bad out there.
