I came home from work last night to find my sweet Lola had some scary looking scabs just above her nose!

        Uploaded with ImageShack.us

sorry if that’s really huge.. I have to run to work soon! She doesn’t appear to have scabs anywhere else (belly, ears, body, etc) and she’s eating well and has plenty of energy… But it’s scary nontheless! The only explanation I can think of is sometimes she’ll fight with her litter boxes (i.e. pulling them from the wall that they’re hooked to and drag them around) but I’m not sure how that could give her such ugly ouchies!

It’s really hard to know with just a photo. It would probably be good to discuss this with your vet.

In the meantime, is there any way to treat it? Neosporin or something? I don’t get paid until friday and I’m not sure when my next day off will be. (I’m working all seven days this week and next week’s schedule isn’t out yet.) I just don’t want her to be in pain.

Something looks wrong with the fur around her left eye as well…

Definately needs to go to the vet.

do you have venomous spiders in your area? if it gets ANY bigger by tomorrow morning, do not wait for the appointment.

Do you have any other rabbits?
Make sure after handling her to wash your hands between handling other animals.

What do her genitals looks like, are they inflamed or have flaking?
The reasons I am asking as it ‘almost’ looks like rabbit syphilis, something which is treatable and i have seen many time in shelter bunnies. I usaully see it more ‘on’ the nose then above it though. Either way your vet will be able to help you figure this out.
In the meantime just keep her clean, and reduce any transfur if it is something contaguious.

rabbit syphilis: A venereal disease that produces blisters, lesions, and/or scabs on the genitals and anus on a rabbit. Often, legions can spread to mouth, lips, nose, eyelids, ears, and feet, spread when a rabbit washes his or her hindquarters. The disease is contagious and can be passed between mating animals and between a doe and her offspring. Also called vent disease or spirochetosis.

                          Ditto that.
Eye also looks as if it’s been overgroomed by another rabbit. (?)

I agree with Andi – but that’s just on impressions from a picture so it’s good you’ve got a vet checking her out soon. If it is something like rabbit syph, don’t worry! It’s not uncommon an it’s treatable. : )

If you don’t want to wait until Friday, perhaps you can drop her off in the morning at the vet on an earlier day and then they can see her whenever they get a chance during the day. Then call you with the report and you can pick her up after work.

I don’t have any other bunnies, but I haven’t had her long and I’m not sure what sort of environment she was in before I got her. Her genitals look fine as far as I can tell.. and unfortunately the only ‘exotic’ vet in my area does not work on Thursday.

She’s eating fine and drinking lots of water and is very active (she put up quite the fight when I turned her over to check her out, heh!) and it looks significantly less red now that I got home. But we’ll see. So scary.

With rabbit syphyllis it isn’t  spreadable to humans    if thats what it is.   No telling I am not a vet  lol

Still eating and drinking well and acting normally… Vet appointment is tomorrow morning. I just hope she isn’t hurting. I read in Rabbits for Dummies (don’t judge me!) that regular neosporin (not the pain suppresant kind) is okay to use on ouchies like hers. Is this true? If so I’ll grab some on my way home from work tonight.

Yes, the plain kind is fine for bunnies and used frequently. I would just use it sparingly and not in the morning so it doesn’t mask the problem when the vet sees her. My thinking is like us not taking an aspirin just before the dr. takes your temp when you are sick. You want a good diagnosis, and no interference with the prescribed treatment being used right away.

Okay, thank you for the confirmation. The book gave me a lot of conflicting information when compared to other bunny owner’s personal experience so I thought it best to double check.

It’s actually a pretty good book. And, as it turns out, Lola is a LOUIE and HE has mites. Let the cleaning fest begin!

She gave him a shot of something (I can’t remember the name) and I’ll go back in 10 days for round 2. For the meantime I just need to clean his cage really well, wash all of my bedding (he’s been on my bed before.. and I think I got lucky and got some mites too, which is awesome) and put neosporin on his ouchies. Poor baby.

The vet says he probably got them from hay.. so I have to throw out all the brand new hay and bedding I got.. miserable I tell you! Nothing like pet problems on a tight budget, eh?

                                                Ivermectin probably.

How long have you had him? It’s possible he came with the mites.

Really? That’s a relief, the vet said there was a possibility I might.

And I’ve only had him a few weeks.. the vet said I might have gotten him that way, or it might have been in the hay/bedding. It hurts my wallet to throw out a 90% full bag of carefresh! Alas!

At any rate, nice clean cage now, eating and drinking well.. now it’s time to wash all the bedding.

Unless you’re covered in fur, you can’t get mites from your bunny.

Remember to wash all of his plastic toys and food/water bowls. You might also want to quickly wipe off the bars of his cage.

Also, be prepared to clean everything all over again a few times. When we thought that one of my rabbits had fur mites, the vet had us clean the whole room after the 2nd and 3rd dose of Ivermectin as well.

I see no reason to throw out a new bag of bedding – it would be in the current bedding not the fresh bedding. Makes no sense to me.

I believe it’s most likely he came to you this way – you’ve had him for only a few weeks and sometimes changes cause rabbit’s autoimmunity to become lower and the mites will flare up. He surely didn’t get them from a fresh bag of carefresh.

Does this vet see rabbits regularly?

I agree, its highly unlikely the fresh bag of carefresh would be the culprit. I think you’ll be safe keeping it.

Like the others, I think the carefresh will be fine – the vet probably assumed you were just using hay. Perhaps call them and double check?

I cleaned his cage hardcore and all of his thingamabobbers with a 10-1 water-bleach solution, thoroughly rinsed afterward of course, and after his next injection I will go ahead and do the same thing. Luckily I have hardwood floors so mites don’t have many places to hide. >
