        Hi everyone,

Just out of curiosity im wondering does anybody elses bunnies have a phobia of cooking/frying etc? Every since we got Henry he has been very outgoing…nothing much scares him but when we start cooking he always thumps and runs straight for his cage where he will sit there without budging til we have finished. I thought this was unique to him but Poppy is the very same only she thumps a lot more and lies really close to the ground with her ears back like she has been stunned or something.

This evening when we were cooking they were both terrified only this time they had each other and cuddled up which was so cute but then Henry tried to bury himself under his girlfriend. He hid his head under her for about half an hour ….she didnt seem to mind.

Are my bunnies too high strung or do other rabbits hate kitchen sounds too?

One of my bunnies Cotton hates any type of meat smell, etc and does not like to be around when we are eating a snack that contains meat.  Penny does not mind as much and will at least stay on the couch if I am eating something that has meat, but she still disapproves.  Usually the bunnies like to smell our snacks though they will never try them- tortilla chips, crackers, popcorn, cookies.  They seem to be attracted to any sweet scent even though they will not even try it- and that is mainly WHY I let them sniff it, I don’t want them to eat it anyway.  Penny will “chin” anything offered to her- cookie, tortilla chip, etc- so the dogs benefit from that as they get the “chinned” item.  It does not bother me to smooch and kiss my bunnies, but I can’t eat something Penny rubbed her chin on.

This is very normal for buns. We dont know if it is the clanging of pans or the smell of the food. I am sure the smell really bugs them especially if you are cooking meat. Our buns will typically go and hide downstairs or upstairs when we cook, but never on the main level where the kitchen is.

Even if we are washing dishes they will go run and hide. So I think any noise from the kitchen may set off most buns.

Luna, if someone asked me to name my bunny’s #1 phobia it would hands down be kitchen noises! I thought by now my rabbits would be used to them, but the clatter of pots and pans and oil frying on the stove makes them very unhappy. They don’t thump anymore but they find their favorite hiding spot and wont come out until the kitchen is quiet again. Franklin is always very chill and adaptable…We had a bunch of friends over last night, and she was running around begging for everyone to give her attention, even when some of the guys were very loud and were clapping their hands. However, we played a game of quarters and the metalic clang on the table really bugged her, and she sulked in her corner until we were done. I think its something about the noise…probably very annoying to those sensitive ears. The cooking smells must be weird to them too.

Mine also hate the cooking in the kitchen – I’m not sure why. Mine can even detect the “click” of the electric stove top being turned on and they head for the hills immediately!

If Dave cooks steak (it’s occaisional) Rupert hides for over a day! VERY fearful-we thought it could be the sizzling but we got a deep fryer for xmas (Terrible gift, Dave uses it everyday and my place REEKS) which sizzles and Rupert has no problem with it so I’m sure it’s the smell for him.

And here was me thinking I had oddball bunnies! Its nice to know its normal My bunnies are living in the kitchen now so i hope they can get used to the sounds to some degree as i dont want them always hiding away! I think with mine, it is more a case of the sound irritating them than the smell because Poppy starts thumping when my boyfriend starts making a racket looking for pots and pans! I always say to him…. be more sensitive to the animals and he says ” its our home, they are gonna have to get used to it”! So i guess thats them told

                      Oh, the evil Sizzle sound!!

I originally had my buns in my kitchen – cause that is where I am most of the time. That lasted about 2 weeks. I am a chef. Therefore I kind of cook, a lot. I have to wash my hands very well after handling meat or the buns will not come close to me.

I’m not sure which they think is worse cooking meat or cooking vegetables – “How could you do such a thing?”

KatnipCrzy – about once or twice a month my buns get a “treat” of a bite sized tortilla chip – they go crazy for them!

Maryann jumps straight up into the air and runs off whenever I open up a two liter bottle of soda. I assume it sounds like a snake.
