Hello. My bunny was put in his play pen and when I went to put a mat in his pen, he started running as if he was running for his life, thumped his foot. His cage is on a desk 3 ft above, so he was able to hop up and then he went into the cubby, and he rarely goes in there. There wasn’t any other animals in the room and the blinds were still down so he couldn’t have seen a bird. The only thing I can think of that spooked him was I was taking 2 little balls that were laying in the mat from a broken water bottle and throwing them away. Is this natural behaviour that sometimes rabbits get scared for no reason?

It can be that buns get scared by random things. It can be he was distracted and didn’t see you there doing stuff until too late and went in survival mode

Mine at usually 2 a.m. goes in the same spot of the kitchen, stares into nothing and then freaks out and starts thumping. I guess he can see monsters

I lost count of the amount of times Peanut thumped yesterday. For seemingly no reason. But bunnies have very sensitive hearing so your bun (and my Peanut!) may have heard something that us humans couldn’t detect. Or you may have possibly spooked him. It’s okay, it happens sometimes. Buttercup will often be cleaning herself and despite me talking to her, she doesn’t realise I’m there til she looks up and she jumps lol.
