› FORUM › HOUSE RABBIT Q & A › Sandy is getting spayed today
We drove an hour to the vet’s and dropped Sandy off. They weighed her and she’s already 4.4 lbs! They said to call at 1 to see when she was going into surgery and when to pick her up. I just called up and they said she’ll be done in an hour but I can’t get over there until my husband comes home at 3:30
I hope she does ok. I’ll keep you guys updated!
{{Sandy Spay Vibes}} Keep us posted!!

Keeping Sandy and you in my prayers for her successful and quick healing from her spay!
(((((((((((((((((((((((((Sandy))))))))))))))))
Is she home now, or staying overnight?
Did they send some meds, ie. painkiller, home with you? It’s sometimes a good idea to have it on hand, especially if you are far from the vet.

We’re back home! She’s doing very well and ate 2 raisins in the car. We put her back in her uberclean cage (with everything out that she could jump off of) and nibbled a piece of lettuce. She’s laying down right now but seems ok.
Oh no, I didn’t ask for any pain meds
When I dropped her off I asked them if she gets any when she comes home and they said no she should be ok. I did ask for a soft cone though in case I see her fiddling with her stiches. I haven’t seen her underside yet, I didn’t want to pick her up and cause her pain. Can I pick her up at all in the next few days to look or how do you tell if she’s healing well? We are far from that vet but we arent’ to far from mine, so if anything goes wrong I’ll probably call them. Is there anything else I should do right now or just leave her be? I hope everything heals up well…I’ve never dealt with this before ![]()
Gee, my vet had me look at the stitches in the office & said, “This is normal looking, if you see any discharge, swelling, reddness, call in & bring him/her in.
Edit: I was also told to watch for any change & to keep it clean. Not easy on a squirmy bun. LOL

Hmm well I never dealt with that vet before and they thought that I’m just fostering her and Jen might look after her
That was the reason for the small discount. I’m too afraid to pick her up right now…maybe tomorrow?? I hope she’s ok tomorrow, I have to go in for jury duty (not sure how long) and she’ll be alone.
It is fine to pick the bunny up daily to look at the incision. At my clinic we recommend that the client check the sutures/incision twice daily if they are able to. It is better to pick her up and look than to not check the incision at all.
We tried to pick her up…well I tried and my husband was going to look at the stiches but she ran away, kicked her feet and even attacked me. So I have one pissed off bunny right now.
We counted 4 so far. I don’t know if I’m not doing it right or I’m just really scared to handle her. Any advice on how to handle a angry hormonal stiched up bun?![]()
EDIT: I picked up her front paws and counted about 7…hope that’s right. She wouldn’t eat the staples right? We’d be able to find them if she got them out on the lino.
If your vet used staples and she got them out- I highly doubt she would eat them. Did the vet use sutures or staples?
I am always told to check sutures daily for infection, swelling, redness, seepage, discharge, pulling etc. etc. I don’t think you need to count them-just ensure it looks good (OK it doesn’t look good-it looks like something you’d see in a horror movies-stitches *shivers* but you know, no discharge, swelling etc.)
Try putting her between your legs, and lifting just her front up (Face and frong paws) get hubby to look and/or take pictures. Wear gloves if she’s really homicidal ![]()
Thanks guys! She’s been doing very well and I got out of jury duty at noon since it was the first day and more like orientation. Don’t have to go back until next week (but have to keep going 2 days every other week for 4 months!
). I tried to get her by myself this time but as soon as I touch her she runs off or give me the evil eye. So I have these plastic keys she likes and waved them infront of her and she sat up for a bit so I could see them. Looks pretty clean and I’m still counting about 7 (and yes they’re staples). She looks like she’s in a bit of some pain when she hops with her back feet but other than that she’s eating, drinking and going to the bathroom! She seems a bit moody but if I was her I’d be the same way! Maybe in a couple days she’ll be in less pain and will let me pick her up but of now it’s playing with keys and looking with a flashlight.
Whatever works! I think she will calm down more and more as she heals. When does she go back to have them removed?

The vet said to either take her to the shelter because they think she takes them out herself or back to them in 10 – 14 days. Well that is an hour and 15 min. drive so I’m going to my local vet I take Archie and Gracie to instead and they said they’ll do it for free and also said 10-14 days.
Free vs gas for an hour+ drive, Hmmm that’s a thinker!
Glad to hear she’s doing ok.
Glad Sandy is doing better ![]()
