I am not trying to start a big debate or anything. I am just so worried and scared (and angry). Just an hour ago my family found out that a company wants to open a mine less than a mile away from our farm and would like to buy more land (including our farm). We would never sell, but who wants to live right next to a sand mine? Not only are there bad health effects for those who live around the mines but our small town is full of beautiful country land (creeks, forrests, fresh water springs, ect), the only thing we have is a small church, the rest is just land. The people of my town are making a petition and I would appreciate anyone here signing it if you want to help! I’ll post the link as soon as it’s made. Any advice is welcome

This is what would be lost: (I’ll try to find pics of the forrest, ponds, creek, and natural spring part of our farm) The seond pic is unedited, we had a really orange sunset day in WI one a couple summers ago.

Does this company already own the other land or would they need to buy it from people living there?

i’ve only got a 100′ high, 500′ mountain hill between my back fence and a quarry.
but 80 degree januarys make it worthwhile,, and Leinenkugel is still available here.

see what their best offer for the property, and then double it.

if they accept, say “surely someone willing to pay double so soon, can surely pay triple”

Oh my gosh I would be so infuriated!! Thoughts and prayers go out to your town I hope you can stop it. I would be more than happy to sign a petition for your cause. I wouldn’t let this happen if I lived there I’d be doing everything to stop it. Best of luck!!

It really makes me sad to hear about companies that are destroying our precious countryside. I’m glad your family is refusing to sell!

What does your family farm? Crops? Animals? I’m pretty fascinated by small family farms.

We rent out the fields to a farmer down the road, he rotates between soybeans and sweet corn (yum!). Everything organic. We are planning to buy some chickens, a cow or two, sheep, and a couple goats this summer (probably not all at one time though lol). We will probably sell the eggs and stuff at a local farmer’s market. We’re also going to start boarding a couple horses. I really am interested in doing some more farm-y things.

I agree it’s sad that they don’t see the land’s value and beauty.

Wow, your area looks gorgeous! It sucks that so much of the time we have to choose between resources/industrialization and beauty like that. What exactly is a sand farm?

Thank you Sand mine , the sand they are after is called Frac sand and Wisconsin happens to be the place that has the most of it. Basically they use dynamite and stuff to create a mine, if it’s not done correctly it can realize harmful chemicals into water systems. :/ Plus it’s extremely ugly.

Oh they see the value alright. It isn’t the intrinsic kind though, it’s the kind that comes with dollar signs.
