My bunnies loved to dig in sand and dirt outside, so i’m kinda tossing around the idea of a indoor sandbox.
My thoughts are it would need to be small enough that i could carry it if the sand needed to be washed outside. I am also thinking it would need to be those pre bagged ‘kids’ playsand b/c that stuff is cleaned before packaged. And that the sides would have to be tall for sand to not get kicked out.

        Anyone have an indoor sandbox?
Am i crazy for thinking this won’t be ‘too’ messy? LOL

This topic came up before and concerns were raised about the rabbits ingesting the sand by grooming it off their feet. I have allowed mine access to sand (I have some in my yard and just set up an NIC enclosure on top of it) and my rabbits absolutely loved it. They flicked the sand off their feet actually. Some people really advise against it though for risk of impactions if they ingested some. Maybe try it under supervision and check with your vet? And yes, it would be messy but that’s part of the fun.

I spoke with one of my vets about this awhile back and he mentioned impaction and also he was concerned with the sand because it’s so fine causing eye irritation. I think the person who was asking at the time was wanting to use sand as litter.

I did a search just now and found it mentioned in the same context with clay-based litters. It iis a health hazard. So not a good idea.

No ones eaten it when we play in the sand outside. But i could see indoors being a bit troublesome with it sticking to feet. This would be a toy for the free run area, not in a cage.
I have once had a box of snow for playtime, that was a hit. But there’s no snwo this time fo the year LOL. I may just stick to my original idea of a sandbox outside for there outside playtime. I am just worried about cats thinking it’s a toilet so i’d have to have it covered.

I wouldn’t bring it inside. I could see if you had a small area with some sand outside, but even if it wasn’t a potential health issue, I think the hassle of having it inside wouldn’t be worth it.
