I am so sad to report that my lovebun Samson passed away yesterday. It was quite a shock! I knew that he wasn’t feeling quite like himself starting on the weekend but by Monday he seemed to be doing better. On Friday he peed/pooed outside the litterbox (I assumed it was him and not his buddy Ivy since he was the one sitting in the pee spot and his tooshy was wet). After using a wet towel to wash his feet and dry him I let him out in the living room to bink around. And instead of running around he just flopped under the table. I called the emergency vet and she sad to keep an eye on him through the night and as long as he seemed to be peeing/pooing to wait until Monday. He seemed to pee and poo normally throughtout the weekend and on Sunday evening I even got in a snuggle with him. So I figured he just had an upset tummy and was doing better now. When I called the vet back on Monday she agreed that since he was doing well I didnt need to bring him in asap but that it would be good to get the two of them a checkup as it had been a year since they had last been seen. Tuesday afternoon I picked them up from my house to go to the vet and Samson was soaking wet again with pee. This was once again concerning so I mentioned it to the vet when I dropped them off as to a possible UTI. They got a sample of pee from Samson without much issue and it was very dilute but no crystals or other signs of UTI. The vet called to tell me all this a recommended we get blood from him to see if it was an infection or kidney problem. She wanted to knock him down slightly so she could get blood and shave his hind area to keep it dryer/unmatted from him sitting in pee. I gave her the goahead to put him under and about 10 mintues later she called back to say that within 2 minutes of being put under he passed away. They tried CPR and to give him epi directly to the heart but neither worked. They discovered that he had an infection around his heart and in his chest cavity. Not sure what he was sick with exactly but Ivy got checked out completly and was given a clean bill of health.
It was such a shock to drop off him for a few hours and then be returing to pick him up in a cardboard box. Im not sure that things would have gone differently if I would have brought him in on Saturday since he seemed to be doing much better (eating, drinking, pooping, binking), but I will always wonder!! I took them home and let Ivy sniff around him and snuggle by him to say his goodbyes. He licked his face and gave him some ear snuggles before hopping away. After saying my goodbyes I brought Ivy over for one last time and the little bugger stomped his foot and hopped off to the corner as if to say I know hes dead, Ive already said goodbye, now let me sit in this corner and be sad. Hes burried in the backyard now by our shed. Next fall I plan to plant a rose bush there in his honor.
Such a sad day!!! Ivy is definitly missing him!! I made Ivy a new cage setup and bleached/fully cleaned all the old items from the old setup. Keeping a close eye on him these next few days to make sure hes acting the same. He seems so sad and lonley now though!
