I wasn’t going to post until tomorrow because Sammykins’ surgery isn’t until Thursday, but I am just thinking about it so might as well post now.
I have no concerns about the quality of my vet or the care she will get. Far from it. She is scheduled for 9AM. They will keep her overnight as a matter of course to be sure she’s fine. I will pick her up Friday. My regular days off are both Thurs. & Fri. so no problem there. I have my mother coming over on Saturday to bunsit while I go to work that day. I’ll remove her platform (she hardly jumps anyway) and put her baby blankie into her cage so she can snuggle when she gets home. They told me to bring her food with her. So I’m just worried because I am always worrying about something. Bad habit. Can’t break it.
Ironically, since we discovered the dish towel to play with this past week she’s been happy and zooming and binkying every night! She is so happy and having so much fun.
It will be hard to see her logey after that. I will add to this as the week progresses.![]()
Hee hee. Don’t worry. I was the same way. Just give her lots of lovin and quiet time. 😀 I missed Lily so much even though she was only gone for a few hours. lol. I’m going to worn you that you will be shocked at how out of it they are when you get them home, but she will get better each day. Hug her lots. 😀
Do they have staff there 24 hours a day?
oh yes, i worried just as much. We took Boston to the twin cities and she stayed over night as well. The day of her surgery we went to the mall of america, but i just didn’t have all that much fun cuz i kept thinking about her!!! and thinking about what jared’s reaction was gonna be when he saw the bill!! ![]()
Aw, Pam, you and Sambly-Wambly are in my thoughts and prayers. I am certain she will be just fine, and yes, they are SO out of it afterward, but I’m sure all will be well.
Bunsit…lol. That’s cute, I am so glad your mom can do that for you!
From one worry wart to another, chin up!
It’ll be no time at all before she’s tearing around with that dish towel again.
And I have to say, I’ve been inspired. I brought Mimzy out on my bed for two hours last night and about an hour this afternoon and took one of my old dish towels and just kept draping it over him and playing “Where’s Mimzy?” He LOVED it! ^_^ Thanks for a great idea!
Aw, thank Sammy for the idea. You know how they are when surrounded by toys and then you drop something and suddenly it’s the first toy they decide to play with. Glad to find something to cheer Mimzy up with. He sounds like he’s improving a lot.
My vet sometimes has a guy who stays for 24 hr. care, but not every time. I’m honestly not sure. Her surgery is first thing in the AM.
I was told to bring her food. (And a check is ready…)
Question: She has only accepted Feline Pine (pellets) for litter lately, so I don’t have CareFresh here. But I wondered if the FP is too hard for a sore butt and I should switch to CF for a few days until she is healed. Do you think it matters to her?
How long should I keep her in the cage before she can come out? I thought a couple of days of confinement will help the healing. Guess the vet will answer those kinds of questions depending on how she does. BB, I forgot to check the site for speuter advice. Will look tonight.
I managed to switch a haircut appt. from Friday morning to tomorrow at 4:30. Will be thinking about her anyway, so may as well take care of that while she’s out of the house. I can do a major cage cleaning tomorrow as well once she’s at the vets.
You can try the carefresh litter again. She may not even use her box while she heals. It’s sometimes too hard for them to get in and out. You could try some soft, absorbent blankets or towels, at least for the first 24-48 hours. She should be cnfined for about a week. Definitely the first 3-4 days in her cage. After that, depending how she is moving around, you can try to let her out in a small area where there is nothing to jump up onto for a short time (like 20-30 minutes, then she goes back to her cage for a rest.)
I’d call today and see if this guy will be overnight when she is overnight, and ask what kind of medical training he has, or if he doesn’t do anything, just watches and then calls in the vet. For some reason, some vets insist on keeping buns overnight even when there is no one there to “care” for them. That doesn’t make a lot of sense to me, and it seems to just be a method they have for padding the bill. Personally, I felt much better having Meadow at home with me overnight, and I was able to wake up a couple times thru the night and take a peek at her. She barely even moved for the first 24 hours. As long as you’re comfortable with it, and there will actually be someone there keeping an eye on things, it wouldn’t hurt, but I’m not sure it’s necessary if all goes well with the surgery.
I wouldn’t switch her litter since she’s already used to the Feline Pine – she’ll be fine – she may not even use her litter box for the first day or so, but don’t start changing things up.
I’ve kept my rabbits overnight at the vets sometimes when I had too and I was okay with it – I figure I’m not home during the day so even if someone is not there at night what is the huge difference…but that is just me. I’m sure if they have someone overnight that person has some kind of training and they usually leave late and get in early too. Most vets have animals overnight.
As for keeping her in her cage – at least a few days – she may not even feel like coming out anyway.
((Successful Spay Day Vibes for Sammy)) ((Pam)) All the best!
I don’t think feline pine would be a problem at all
Your vet sounds great-my pet peeve is the fast-before-surgery so them telling you to bring food just puts them right in my good books!
The day of the spay is important to keep them warm, clean and quiet. They generally sleepy from the meds, the day at the vets and excitement and the surgery. I always give them a nice quiet small place to recover. After that it just depends on how they are doing. You don’t want to allow binky-crazy-zoom-play while they are on pain meds (in case they over do it!) and stitches don’t generally come out until 10-14 days later, but after three days and the meds are done you can certainly allow her some time out supervised
Just use your gut instinct-I’m sure you know whats best

Ugh. She was good all morning until I let her out to go into her travel box. Then it was running, hiding, wiggling and squirming and pooping on the rug, boxing and growling. The works. The treat lure didn’t work well enough. I turned my back to ignore her and that helped, but not enough. So, once mushed into the travel box she was shaking. I left her there as she gave me a mini-butt and stink eye. Phone won’t ring with results until after 1 at the latest.
(((((((((((((((Sammy!)))))))))))))
Oh goodness, she was cranky! Poor thing – let us know what the vet says – vibes for Samantha.
iT’S 12:30 and my vet just called to say she’s waking up now and it went smoothly. Asked me to call back in a few hours.
Oh, good news :~)
Wonderful!!
