I went to the doctor on Tuesday for my back.  As some of you know I have been suffering with really bad lower back pain for a while now. I thought it may have been sciatic nerve problem or maybe a result of the car accident I was in since I never sought help for it but nope I am wrong.  My doctor said it has to do with my sacroiliac joint?  I am just now reading up on it because I just had to remember what it was called that he told me.  He said it will get better with walking. He didn’t give me pain medication or anything. Today/last night was soooooo horrible!  My back is so bad…I couldn’t sleep…I went for a short walk today with my dog but the ground was burning her poor feet so I had to hurry home.  It hurts to sit and I just don’t know what to do anymore. I’ve tried just about all the pain meds out there (non prescription). I just don’t know what to do.  He didn’t give me pain meds because he said it’s just a bandaid.  I don’t want to be in pain forever and I need to do things!

My head hurts extremely bad today because I can’t sleep and my eyes feel watery.  My back hurts so bad.  I just want to be normal again.  =(

Does anyone know what the sacroiliac joint is and can explain to me why it would be hurting?  Keep in mind I am only 22…

        Thanks!

It might be worth trying some of the natural anti inflammatory treatments for arthritis like Fish Oil, Krill Oil or Glucosamine. I think Celery supplements and Turmeric supplements would also work.

That is the “joint” that connects your pelvis to your back. There is one on each side of the spine. This is the joint that stretches during child birth to make room, otherwise the pelvis wouldn’t be big enough. When you’re having a problem with that joint, it will cause lower back pain on that side. I haven’t heard of it causing some of the symptoms you have been experiencing though. The pain running down your leg is more characteristic of sciatica. The not being able to sit though is consistent since long periods of sitting can make it worse. Hmm..

if its within your budget,, get one of those homedics back massagers.
when i pulled my back i got the quad-roller with heat, and you push back into it and let it grind into your back for 20 minutes and its amazing.
when it hits your tender areas it almost makes you jump but just keep pressed into it
i don’t think they still make that EXACT model (QRM-400H),, but i think they have one with a joystick control now.

i haven’t used it since leaving IL (2 year moving anniversarry tomorrow),, if you want to borrowing it.

I’m not a doctor, but as someone with chronic back issues, I view medication as an important part of healing. If you can go through the day with no meds (or with just basic, otc anti-inflammatories), and walk, stretch, and try to keep active within your ability… and then at night take a pill so you can relax and sleep, that is a good combination. It’s unrealistic to ask you to be active, but then not give anything to help ease your pain.

Doctors are very hesitant now (some of them) to prescribe stuff b/c of the rate of abuse. Is this your doctor, or just some random doctor? I can understand the doctor’s hesitation if you’re not a patient of record and he doesn’t know you from Adam. Is there someone else you can go to for a second opinion?

I don’t understand your doctors logic on this one. “It will get better with walking” doesn’t help when you’re in too much pain to walk!

I have chronic knee issues and there are definitely days that OTC’s don’t help me at all. My doctor never offered to prescribe me pain meds so eventually I just started asking for them. I’ve have even recieved prescriptions from Urgent Care doctors without anyone ever treating me like a drug seeker. I guess the doctors in my area are lax O.o . Also, before I look like a pill popper, , I don’t take them on a regular basis just when it hurts too much to sleep or get around.

If OTC’s aren’t helping and you’re unable to function I agree with Beka about getting a second opinion. While obviously pain meds shouldn’t be abused they were created for a reason and should be used when needed.

EDITED TO ADD: I’m obviously not a doctor and this is all my opinion.

longhairmike: I just looked up those back massagers I really wish I could get one of those right now! That would be so amazing. I am afraid, though, that if I get a massager or something that it will make my back hurt more. I have never had a massage or anything before…Except for the ones at the nail salon where you sit in the chair while getting a pedicure and those massage chairs HURT! haha

I think I am going to call my doctor on Monday to see if I can get some pain medication. Yesterday was a horrible day and the night before I couldn’t even sleep. =( Today it’s feeling a little better. I am going to go for a walk later with my dog.

Last night I took some acetaminophen and surprisingly I think it helped a little. I wasn’t in as much pain and was able to sleep. I took some as soon as I woke up this morning too but I don’t think it really helped much today.

I hardly go to the doctor but he IS my primary doctor that I would go to if a problem arose.

What about a chiropractor? They could do some decompression and traction. It might help. If this is related to your car accident, auto insurance should cover chiropractor visits.
