Hello! So my Holland lop Wilbur has had a runny nose since I’ve gotten him (about 6 weeks ago) and I haven’t really worried about it since I just figured it was because he was hot. This runny nose isn’t going away though and I’m starting to wonder if it’s something more serious. Recently I’ve really noticed how loud he breathes, like I can hear him from the other side of the room. I’m guessing that’s not normal? Also I’ve recently switched over the pine pellets for his litter and around the time I switched he started sneezing a lot more. Is it possible he’s allergic to the pine? Or does he have some kind of respiratory infection? He acts completely normal besides this.

Sounds like he has some respiratory issue/infection. I don’t think it’s the litter since it started before. I would take him to the vet, it’s likely easy to treat, the sooner the better.

I agree with Hazel. He most likely has a respiratory infection. My rabbit, OB, had a respiratory infection recently, and thankfully, it is very easy to treat.  It should be over in a few weeks after taking him to the vet, for treatment.

The litter switch is probably just a coincidence. I agree with the others. Best to have him checked out.

Ok, so how soon do you think I should take him to the vet?

The sooner you go, the better the chances of a swift recovery. So I think you should make an appointment next week if possible. Respiratory infections in rabbits should be treated with antibiotics, so they dont spread to the middle ears or lungs.

Ok so we just went to the vet today and they do think it’s an upper respiratory infection. They gave me Orbifloxacin, has anyone used this before?

I haven’t used it before. It isn’t listed on MediRabbit, but I believe it is being used “off-label” for rabbits (like many other antibiotics).

I’ve not used it but it is in the same family of meds that baytril  (enrofloxacin) is in and that is widely used for rabbits.

If you don’t see an improvement after the course of antibiotics, I do think it would be worth testing a different litter. It couldn’t hurt to test the theory. Some can be more sensitive to the wood based one, even when they are deemed safe litters. It might not have been the initial cause of runny nose but it could have exacerbated things.

Do you have any plug-in room odorisers or anything like that where he is?

No plug ins, he’s the only one smelling up the room lol. I really hope these antibiotics work they cost an arm and a leg lol. Thanks for your feedback! I’ll update if the antibiotics seem to be working, that is if he ever lets me give them to him…
