hi friends! last night when i got home from work i noticed thumper’s eye looked funny. upon closer inspection i noticed that the fur around it was wet and crusty. i figured i’d wait until today and see if it got better on its own, and it didn’t. i don’t think it got any worse. this seems really sudden, as before i left for work yesterday i didn’t notice anything weird about his eye.

now, i recently had to unexpectedly move home to my mom’s for about two weeks until i could find an apartment of my own. she wouldn’t let me keep them in the house, so i had to keep them in the garage. none of my friends would let me AND the buns stay with them (and i don’t blame them), so this was my only option. i was looking up his symptoms earlier and read that poorly ventilated areas can sometimes cause issues with them, so i’m worried that keeping them in the garage may have had a negative impact on his health. as for his behavior, we just moved into our new apartment a couple hours ago, and he hasn’t touched his pellets yet but neither has baxter. i think they’re both still getting used to the place. thumper is running around and binkied when i gave him his pellets at the house this morning and went straight to chowing down. he’s currently exploring the apartment. he does however keep cleaning himself, especially the eye that’s affected, so i’m sure it’s irritating him a little. he also seems to be squinting it a lot.

in the picture included, i had just wiped his eye with a damp, warm cloth so it looks wetter than it actually was. his nose also seems slightly wet, but not runny–and i’m not sure if that’s from me wiping him with the cloth or if it’s actually runny. his other eye seems fine although it did have the tiniest bit of crust that i also wiped off. definitely looks nothing like this one. he hasn’t been sneezing, he hasn’t been lethargic, he was eating fine this morning, so any ideas what it could be? i’m of course going to take him to a vet but this conveniently just had to flare up on a friday night/saturday when no vets near me are open, and i’m worried sick about my poor bun.

sorry the picture is so far away, he’s busy exploring and that’s the closest he’ll let me get without hopping away at the moment! https://imgur.com/gallery/cnKuYA6

Does the eye itself look irritated? Maybe he bumped/hit it? You said he has been squinting.

Living in a garage is dangerous for humans let alone animals because of the fumes in there from cars and just household stuff stored in there. He might have gotten a chemical that was in the air in his eye and that might be causing the irritation. You can always go to a vet if it lasts longer than a couple of days as it could be something more. If you start to see him sneezing then he probably has a URI.
