Hello everybody. I have an x pen thats attached to the main cage. My floors are extremely slippery so I have a large blanket under the x pen. As you can imagine this is very annoying to maintain. When my little bun is active the blanket gets pulled and scrunched up even though it is supported by weights on each side, therefore I have been wanting to update this setup to a rug. I have been eyeing a flat woven rug from Ikea which has a sisal warp and jute weft. It’s called the OSTED. Would this rug be fine to use? Would it be too harsh on my buns paws? Do you guys think he’ll try to eat it? I’m also open to other suggestions. Thank you in advance

          Hey there!

With any surface there’s a risk of chewing/destruction. We went with a fluffy rug this past winter, December, and by March we ended up throwing it out. There was strings everywhere, some even ended up outside and around our house! One of our bunnies absolutely loves digging and pulling at it.

I suggest foam pieces that connect, like for a kids room. But there’s still risk that they’ll chew on it. We got the rug from a thrift store for $7, so throwing it out after three months wasn’t a huge deal.

I’d suggest a heavy traffic one. They are tough and able to take a beating, easy to vacuum and wash as well because they arent super fluffy. But it might be too rough for bunny feet to be constantly on it.

If the woven rug feels durable and not too expensive (unless price isn’t a big deal), I’d go for that one before considering a heavy traffic one.

I have a flat weave rug in my buns pen. It works as a good deterrent for chewing though they have done a little work on the edges. The main issue with flat weave is that it can be quite tough on the feet so you’d also need some resting mats and other soft surfaces. I’m not sure if it being made if sisal is a good or bad thing. Sisal is safely digested by bunnies however the fact that it’s sisal might make it more inviting smell- wise to chew on.

I’m not sure if that helps but I hope so I also have a green and white striped Ikea rug in their area. It’s a little softer style of flatweave, again they have nibbled the edges but it’s working well otherwise. I’ll try to find the name of it for you.

Edit: It’s called the Vestbirk but I can’t seem to find it on their website anymore.
