Last night at 9pm, Rucy was gobbling down her food, doing her normal stuff.  Nothing out of the ordinary.   This morning, I went to check on her and she was breathing heavy and her temperature was too low.    I called the vet to let them know we were coming so they’d be ready.  As soon as I got there, they took her and started trying to stabilize her.  They did get her stabilized and then they did blood tests and xrays.

I just got a call from the vet and her bloodwork came back normal, but her xrays look like either she has pneumonia or a lung abcess.(it’s hard for them to tell for sure which it is as they look the same on xrays)

She does have a bit of gi stasis, (not too far along) but that is due to the other problems.  So, I never thought I would hope for pneumonia but at least that could be more treatable.  She will be on baytril and penicillian INJECTIONS every other day through the skin.  She responded to that well when she had her jaw abcess so IF it is a lung abscess, hopefully that will help too!

I asked how in the world did she get pneumonia, and they said it was partly due to her age.  Rucy, I know is a MINIMUM of 8 years, but that’s because I can just track back to how long she was with me, and how long she was at the shelter, and their estimated age at the time they took her in.  But I have also been told she could be 10 years old, so ???

The other thing that is tricky with Rucy is because she has a blocked tear duct and a goofy nasal jaw area due to her three abscess surgeries, her goop doesn’t drain properly so she has always been a bit of a sneezer to clear stuff out, and Jack keeps her eyes clean and dry for her.

They think, if it’s pneumonia, that they caught it early enough.

She’s at the vets right now and they will keep her there until this evening. They said she’s already perking up and more active in her cage, they just want to see her eat.

Of course, I am happy about this, but I am also a bit cautious, as not too long ago, I was going to pick up Bailey because she was perking up, and she died a few hours later in my arms at the vets,

Rucy is a spunky ‘old lady” who is so loved by us and especially by Jack who right now is very sad without her this afternoon.  He looks for her and then just sits and waits in the spot she usually hangs out.

We are hoping for a speedy recovery.

Oh no, that is very frightening – HUGE healing vibes for Rucy.

Please keep us updated – I know you are extremely worried – I would be too.

It sounds like she’s going to be on heavy duty meds too – have you done pen-g shots before? Make sure you warm up the pen-g before you inject her since it has to be refrigerated.

Come on, Rucy girl.  You’ve got plenty of gas left in the ol’ tank, snap out of this so you can harass and cajole your Mom and Dad for another ten years!

See also if you can do the injectible baytril as well. I think if she’s ill you might find it easier and less stressful to give her injections rather than doing it orally.

Sarita – I’ll ask for that – the injections are definitely less stressful for her when done properly.

Thanks everyone for all the encouragement!

I got the “clear” to go pick her up, and she looked better. Her temp was back to normal – still a little low on energy, but she’s been through alot! She’s not breathing as heavy, but it will take time to get that back to normal.

We have a bunch of meds, and I will be keeping a close eye on her all night.

Jack, right away, went up to her and snuggled with her. He missed her so much. He never seems to be phased by the vet smell and just greets her with happiness and affection. The vet felt it would be safe for them to be together and it would help her heal.

So she will be on meds for a month, and she will have x-rays again in two weeks to see how things are progressing. Thank goodness for pet insurance!

Thanks again for all your positive vibes! Much appreciated!

So was it the pneumonia? Or an abscess? (I didn’t see if you said one or the other.)
Aw, sweet Jack! I still think of your description of him on the site that says he would go up to his reflection and HONK for joy! He is one VERY special rabbit and so is Rucy!

Here’s to Rucy getting back to her old self superquick so they can be happy again! ^_^

Mimzmum – They said that they don’t know for sure whether it’s pneumonia or a lung abcess as both look similar on the x-rays. (with pneumonia, one lung can be affected and have fluid, and i guess it looks similar to a lung abscess) Time will tell. I am getting a second opinion with my regular vet when she returns (she’s off Mondays and Tuesdays). But my guess is if it were an abscess blocking her airways, she wouldn’t respond so quickly. I mean even if the pen-g and baytril helped shrink down the abcess, I doubt it would happen within 12 hours, but I could be wrong, I’m not a vet.

I have been watching Rucy carefully and she’s not back to her normal spunky self, but she’s eating, drinking, grooming herself, but she quickly gets tired. She takes many breaks. She’ll start to feel better while she’s relaxed and then she’ll get up to do stuff, and then she’ll get tired – which is normal for what she’s fighting right now – her temp is normal, and her breathing is no longer frantic. So she’s just going to be tired for awhile. The vets said it can be a long healing process.

THIS IS BINKYBUNNY – I just forgot to sign out of my admin role.

Thanks so much. I am just so relieved that she is not in the danger zone anymore, but from what I have read about pneumonia and lung abcesses, both can take awhile, so it won’t be an easy month for Rucy And I will have to keep a close eye on her until she is back to full health as this kind of stuff can also take a down turn quickly.

Today, she is resting, and Jack is cuddling her when she wants, and giving her space when she wants. I can tell he knows she’s not feeling well, and he is either right with her or near her (when she wants to be alone in her cubby). He won’t even leave the bunny room unless she does.

I also asked Dana Krempels and it looks like the vets did the right thing. She did suggest a nebulizer if she has trouble breathing again, which when my reg vet is back in the office, I’ll ask her about it.

The x-rays and everything were sent over to my regular vet, so I’ll call on Wednesday to see what her thoughts are on all this too. But so far from what I’ve read, it looks like the treatment is the right thing.

Lung abcesses are very hard to get a culture from so that is why we are doing the two types of meds to cover abscess and lung infection all at once.

                                                                I’ll keep you updated
