Is it possible for a predominantly black rabbit to have ruby eyes? I was on the phone with the vet I took Pacey to for his flea medicine switching vets to them since they seem to know more about rabbits than my regular vet. He couldn’t remember which one Pacey was and I said “He is the one that came in for the revolution” and he said “Oh yeah the little black bunny with the ruby eyes.” I am still learning about rabbits but I didn’t think that a predominantly black rabbit could have ruby eyes. I say predominantly because he has a white foot, mouth and a tiny white spot on his head.

Hmm, interesting question Sonn. Bonsai is all black and his eyes look red when the light shines on them just so, so I am wondering if that is where they got the ruby eyes from? Admittedly, I do not know much about rabbit genetics, perhaps someone else can chip in with more info?

I’d be interested to know as well – I also have a bunny that has the same coloring, almost all black except he’s got a white spot on his chin and a white spot on his nose, so when it is dark and he is eating, you can still see the two little white dots going up and down! His eyes always look black though, the only time he has ruby eyes is in the camera when he gets red eye.

                    Alright here’s what she said

It IS possible to have a black rabbit with red eyes…A REW ( RED EYED WHITE) gene can be carried for over 20 generations and pop up out of the blue…
Now onthe other hand there are siamese sables ( which can actually look black, but in the light you can see the sable, they will have what is called a ruby cast.
You will find rabbits with Ruby cast sway while they are sitting.. some are very slight and you hardly notice, others with really rock side to side.

that’s interesting K&K. so is the REW gene resessive? i think it’s neat how in a litter of buns you can see so many variations of colors and patterns.

Thanks! I have been looking at his eyes non stop now lol sometimes they look black sometimes brown and sometimes dark red. He does sway a bit when sitting still but I thought that was just because he had so much hair in his eyes lol.

Actually she thought your bun may be a very dark siamese cast…She said to use bright light and see if his underside is chocolate colored, and then you’d have REW chocolate siamese cast bunny.
