I caught Lullabelle chomping on a rubber band. It looks like she only got half of it — and I don’t know if I should be concerned. Should I wait to see if it passes or any symptoms come up?? Or should I take her to the emergency vet?
Oh dear, I would give the vet a call for a consult on it. Is she still eating and pooing O.K.? The thing with the rubber bands like with any foreign object, can get stuck in its system (intestinal obstruction) or get stuck in their teeth. are you sure she ate it? How big of a rubber band was it?
Oh great just what you need! Did you find the other half?
I had just caught her when i posted the topic,i was browsing the site actually when I heard some chomping going on when i noticed, so no strange behavior as of right now. It was not a big rubber band, normal kind, and I pulled the half I found out of her mouth and didint see anymore on the floor anywhere so i am assuming she ate the other half. I’ve been watching her since she ate it, I dont expect anything to happen right now, but shes acting normal climbing shelves and such.
seriously… this rabbit has me on my toes all the time!!! its always something with her isint it? i wonder if shes not part satan? haha.
I bet you have the vet on speed dial now!
actually its #3
If you are not married maybe you should look into dating a veterinarian.
I’ve thought about it! But I can’t find one that isint old and funny looking. I know I shouldnt base it off looks, but on their rabbit medical knowledge. 😀
Oh y’all are a hoot! Make sure she gets fiber to help pass things through. If you notice anything not normal, take her to the vet ASAP.
thanks for the advice scarlet I’m going to watch her and give her some extra pumpkin to help with the pooping of the rubberband process. If anything starts looking weird its speed dial time…I’ll let you guys know if anything happens.
Definately keep us updated. I’ve looked around doing research and all I can find are not so good stories about rubber bands. I sent an e-mail out to see if any of the mods have had their furballs do this. I’ve been very fortunate with my two, they haven’t gotten into a rubber band.

HHHAHAHAAHAHA!! That was funny. I needed a something to make me laugh today. Thanx
Scarlet – thanks for alerting the mods. I have not had my bunnies eat a rubberband (that I know of)
xnovalentine – you have a child in bunny’s body. You might need to look into bunny daycare soon if this keeps up.
Anyway, I think you have received the best advice already, so let us know how it goes. Get your bunny to eat lots of hay, hay, hay
Helloworld!!
ooo that’s concerning, I’d be worried too. Hay is always a good thing in these situations – as Binky recommended since it keeps everything mooooving. Please let us know how she is doing, hope she’ll be ok
Hmm – I have not had any of my bunnies eat a runner band, though, in their explorations of my house they have eaten quite a few odd things. One thing I’ve noticed is that very often I I will see them with something in their mouths, and they have chewed it – but not actually swallowed it. Are you sure that she actually ingested the rubberband? Do you think she may have chewed on it but not actually swallowed it? The closest thing my bunnies have eaten to that is an earplug (one of those squishy ones), and my bun is still OK though the bun did not get the whole thing, and I think it was another one of those situations where I caught him with it in his mouth, but I don’t think he swallowed any of it. I hope that everything “passes” OK!
thanks for your input everyone — i stayed up most of the night watching her and so far shes still normal. shes tearing up the carpet as we speak – so she must be feeling just fine. I’ve been kind of forcing food at her to help the situation and she has no objections. I agree, I do need a daycare if she keeps this up. I was just telling my mom how i wish she was old and lazy already! lol
Like I said, I just caught the rubber band in her mouth, and didin’t find the other half anywhere so I’m just assuming it was swallowed. I’ve cuaght her eating so many random things its unbelievable, but this one was one I really was worried about. I called the vet this morning and they said to just watch her and if she stops pooping to call them, so that’s what i’m going to do!
Again, thanks everyone for your input!
he might get suspicious on the first date when you start asking him trick questions about rabbits…
"yes, i would like another glass of wine… oh. and by the way… do you recommend patients fast their rabbits the night before surgery?"
i’m glad Lulla seems okay. yeah… just watch her… not that you don’t have to anyways…
hahah Beka! Too funny!
Beka, you almost got me busted at work!
I can see the scene. The lights turned down low, the slightly yellow flicker of the fireplace on the walls of the apartment. A half drunk bottle of chardonnay sits on ice on the coffee table as soft music plays from somewhere in the background.
"Honey?"
"Yes?"
"I need to ask you something…Something important."
"Sure, anything you like, you know that"
"Well, OK. Did you *really* meet Dana Krempels, or were you just trying to impress me on our first date?"
"Ack, I’m busted! I just read her articles, never met her. After I blew that Metacam question, I needed a comeback!"
ROTFL !!!
ha ha ha, omg Osprey!
well I’m very relieved to hear she’s doing ok, i was worried!
hahahah, I like it.
it’d sure be a relief to find the whole rubber band… i hope everything is still okay!
my bun’s vet is around my age but unfortunately she’s a she… and um… i’m not lesbian. otherwise i would totally date her! lol. still keeping on with holding out for a man here (if you know of any in southern ontario just let me know!) (seriously tho)
Oh no my stomach hurts from laughing so hard!!! LOL Oh y’all! LOL Whew. Laughter is very good therapy. Babybunsmum there was talk of cloning Lisa’s hubby but I think that fell through due to lack of funding…. ; ) I hear ya, single myself too.
Cripes I forgot to add *novalentine* I’m glad that things are O.K. and it’s good to hear what the vet said as well. That saves a trip and gives some peace of mind although I know you still need to keep an eye on her. I know the lack of sleep from watching them tires us but we love our furballs and they are worth it!
Come on now Scarlet, if you clone my hubby he does a great impersonation of Mike Myers as Austin Powers, do you think im sexy baby. LOL (he wishes)
If it matters any, my Maryann is a fiend for rubber bands. If one is left anywhere within reach, she’ll find it and start eating it. I once got to her when only a little bit was still out of her mouth. I pulled on it and pulled up the 5 inches of rubber band that she swallowed. Now THAT’s a look on a bun’s face I’ll never forget.
But I know that she’s swallowed some rubber band parts and she’s had no bad reactions to it. Of course, I’m no vet and I suppose if it was too long, that the band could get caught up in her digestive tract but again, I wouldn’t worry until she shows signs of trouble.
lol…lol…lol i can imagine!
Yeh what IS it with rubber?!?!?! Srsly, my running boards are rubber-chewed. Bunny hair brushes-chewed. Remote control buttons-chewed!
Bindi once gave me the scare of my life. I saw him eating a rubber band and tried to grab it and he took off and gobbled it up. I stayed awake with him all night freaking out. Thankfully he was fine. Now before I let either bunny out to run I do an “on all fours floor check” just to be sure nothing like that happens again.
I’m so glad someone else’s bun is also fascinated with the remote control. Cadbury has eaten several buttons off of the TV remote – I have no idea what these buttons even did, and now I’ll never know!
For Other Living Things sells a bunny chew toy that is shaped like a remote. It is a block of wood with raised plastic buttons on it. You can see it here http://www.forotherlivingthings.com/pages/1/sub_cat/10/
Lisa I love Austin Powers! Those movies are so funny!
you guys have exploited my thread! how dare you!!!
LOL just kidding — you guys are a gag! stay awesome!
btw…LOL…lulla’s doing just fine
Sorry! : ) Well, we got a little side-tracked. : )
yay… glad lulla’s okay!
LOL! Greg loves them too he knows every scene off by heart.
I must admit I love them too.
Here’s some stories re: cats & rubberbands. Unfortunately I have more experience w/ that species than the buns.
My cat Katie, loves eating rubberbands. Its like she’s eating spaghetti. She also likes plastic wrap and plastic covers off movies & CDS. I honestly think she’d rather eat a bowl of that garbage than a steak. She was an alley cat, severely underweight when I found her. I think she ate garbage to keep her belly full.
Anyway, sometimes she poops it out. Other times she starts to poop it out and then does the floor scoot to get the rest out. When we see her scoot, we know she ate something naughty.
My friend actually had to wrestle a rubber band out of his kittie’s caboose. There was only a nub poking out, so w/ the vet’s blessing, he had to get the whole thing out. It required a great deal of mineral oil, both internally & externally.
PS the IL vet school is down in Champ-bana! You might want to schedule a road trip. You could also visit Purdue in Indy. Maybe theirs a match.com site for vet groupies?
haha i actually knew a guy who went to u of i vet school …he was engaged though maybe ill transfer schools? hahahaha
ooo ha ha ha, there she goes again – trying to find the hot bunny vet 😉
