        Hello everyone!

I haven’t posted in a long while but have been lurking around most days.  I absolutely love this website and the people on it! Everyone is so nice and helpful (and funny! ).  And of course everyone has the most adorable bunnies!!  I’ve learned so much from everyone over the time I’ve been coming here and would just like to say thanks to everyone and especially BinkyBunny for haveing this wonderful place where so much bunny info is available.  I tell anyone who will even half listen to me about this place.  Anyway – enough gushing and on to my question!

I recently saw a clip on Animal Planet that showed a rabbit shelter where they were feeding rose petals to the buns.  I’ve also heard it mentioned a time or two on here.  My husband gave me a dozen red roses for Valentine’s Day and I was wondering if I washed them really well, would it be okay to give the petals to my  buns to eat?  Or is it only special roses that they can eat?  The buns on tv were enjoying the petals so much and I would like to see what  my buns think of them but I don’t want to give it to them if there’s any chance it could harm them in any way.

        Thanks!

Hi Bunnyluvr, I wouldn’t give Roses to your rabbit that have come from stores and florists. You just don’t know what kind of fertilizers and pesticides have been used on them, they could be very dangerous to your rabbit….

I agree with Kerri – those are not made for consumption. You would want to get something specifically sold for human consumption. The florist roses and store bought roses have preservatives and added coloring and who knows what else.

              Thanks for the responses guys!

I was thinking that as well.

Does anyone know where I might be able to find some rose petals that are safe? I don’t know anyone with rose bushes nor do I have any.

Ditto on the roses. especially the valentines ones. I imagine they use pesticides for them so they are cosmetically perfect.
You could try organic florists I guess. Or organic fruit & veg might supply organic flowers…
I’ve seen dried petals and hips before sold a tea too.
Best is to keep asking people you know if they grow them and don’t use chemicals on them. I feed mine roses when I have them and they think of it as a bit of a treat.

I have rose bushes and give my bunnies petal from those.  I told my hubby to NOT buy me roses as the bunnies could not eat the petals- and he did know that- but I wanted to remind him.  So here in Michigan- rose petals are a seasonal “treat” for the bunnies- although I wouldn’t think they would be high in natural sugar as fruit would be.   We do not treat our lawn or rose bushes with any chemicals.

bunnyluvr:  We grow our own roses, herbs, vegis, etc. & don’t use any pesticides, growth junk or anything else…just water.  This way we don’t have to worry about them getting something treated.  Lainey LOVES roses (but what doesn’t she like!), however Gulliver could care less about them.

KatnipCrzy:  ADORABLE BUNZ!!!  Does Cotton (I assume) trip over her ears?  WAY too cute!  What is her breed?  I don’t think I’ve ever seen one with such LONG ears .

Thanks guys – am definitely going to grow my own. Should I start from seeds? Or can I just get a starter bush from home depot? Or have they already treated those? I’m just impatient to give my baby’s some rose petals!

By the way – Thanks for posting the adorable pics Katnip! I think Griffin is one of the most beautiful rabbits I’ve ever seen! Those ears, that coloring! Gorgeous, just gorgeous.

                              NO rice!

edit: cooked rice is just liek bread… too many carbs for buns. Uncooked rice can swell int ehir tummies and create bloackages and well… just stay away from rice

Yep- that is Griffin with the huge ears- I will have to get a more current pic of him- he is a blue fawn and his blue is started to be more noticeable in the face area- he is still only 8 months old.  He does sometimes step on his ears- but he has learned very well how to run and manuever at high speeds without his ears getting in the way of his zooms.  What amazes me about him is how LONG everything else is on him- his tail is at least 4 inches long, long legs, and such a long face and large nose.

I obviously love lops- and what I love about my Mini Lops- is just about exact opposite of what I love about Griffin.  Cotton (my avatar) was not being cooperative about eating the rose petals and getting her pics taken- she is like a little bulldog- all short compact and cute- and Griffin is like a Greyhound- long, lanky and adorable.  Schroeder (the black and white) is either a poorly bred Mini Lop or a mix- I adopted him from a shelter so I do not know for sure.

“Garden Treats are all natural, sun dried and full of goodness. Each Garden Treat is a lovely blend of Rosemary, Bay Leaves, Oats, Wheat and Barley – and you can add Lavender or Chamomile if you’d like!

I copied this from BB’s store because I got a sample of it once and I thought I saw rose pieces in it. Turns out they are not in the mix, but you might enjoy this anyway, since it is edible. (By the bunny. Not sure you’d like it. Maybe with some hot fudge on top…)

Thanks RabbitPam. I’ve seen the garden treats in the store and have thought of trying for the buns. Thinking I will definitely try the next time I order some hay (the buns luv BinkyBunny hay!) And hot fudge can make just about anything taste good!
