Okay so I didn’t pay attention to the hay I bought Joey. This morning I noticed she had runny/mushy poops. But when I looked in her litter box I noticed all of these orange things?? I picked one up and realized it was dried papaya! And there were hundreds of them. She was literally pulling out her hay from the rack and sifting through it to get to the fruit and ate I don’t know how much of them.

Keep in mind the only fruit she has ever had is about a tablespoon of watermelon and a tiny piece of banana, twice!

So now she has mushy poop, a dirty butt, and looks downright miserable.

It’s been a long while since I’ve dealt with mushy poops.

Is the protocol still hay and water only until her poops are normal again?

Yes, the protocol is still hay and water only, perhaps with a probiotic -although probiotic powder is difficult to administer unless you put it on wet leafy greens.

Papaya bits hidden in the hay -well, I bet she thought she was a very lucky girl ?Hopefully her tummy will be ok again in just a couple of days.

Ugh, it really annoys me when companies even manage to fill hay with junk food! It’s so irresponsible, I’ve seen it a few times in the UK recently.

I’m sure she’ll be fine with just a couple of days of (regular) hay only

I’ll make sure to look at the bag this time! No wonder she was having excellent litter box habits! She was like YUS FREE SWEETS!!!!

Waiting on an order of hay so I have to use local store hay. One bag had to be taken back because it smelled awful!

Poops are mostly back to normal! I got a bit scared yesterday and took her to the vet. She was super lethargic and just peeing all over herself. She was refusing all food except basil, wouldn’t touch any hay at all, and wouldn’t drink any water.

But she was given some Sub-q fluids and was bouncing around the vets office in no time. She wasn’t in stasis and doesn’t have any infections.

She’s now munching on hay (she’s on a hay only diet for now the basil was my desperate attempt to get her to eat anything) and begging my cat to move over on the couch. Phew.

Glad to hear things are better now. So horrible that companies make and stores sell this stuff. So many unhealthy bunnies out there because people assume if the pet stores sells it, it’s healthy.

Exactly! I gave them an earful when I noticed the dried papaya in it. I’m usually super careful about what my pets consume. And I’m used to them selling just plain Timothy or Orchard Grass hay so I didn’t even think twice when I picked up the bag. If I hadn’t seen all of those orange dots in her litter box I am unsure what would have happened if I just kept feeding it to her.

This is a little mom and pop pet store in the town next to me. The previous owner of the store only sold high end healthy foods/supplies. The new owners not so much. Their response was “it’s good for them it helps with digestion.”

I then showed them the $200 vet bill because of their “healthy” choice. But they just turned a deaf ear to me. I won’t be returning to that store. There isn’t a pet store in my area so I’m just going to go back to buying in bulk online.
