Rolling hay balls

I was just wondering…do any of you have these? if so, do they make a big mess? we’ve been looking for ways to give Boston large amounts of hay at a time (she is caged up up to 8 hours of the day), but a way that is not messy. we’ve tried the hay rack that goes on the outside of the cage but then hay just gets all over the carpet. what do u think of the rolling hay rack?

I haven’t tried these, but I did have some hanging hay cages, and all that did was frustrate my bunnies. They really just don’t have any interest in having their hay contained. I’ve kind of resigned myself to having hay all over the floor, what they eat they eat and what they don’t eat I either recycle in the litter box or throw away. Can’t really afford it, but I want the bunnies happy and eating their food.

Im not sure but i would be afraid he might get his little paw suck or something, and if it rolled down in a struggle it might hurt. But i have no clue lol im always paranoid

i havent bought one of these because i think it would be hard for them to get the hay out. I have a plastic hay hanger that i got from petco and had to cut a square out of the bars in the center and then electrical tape the cut edges so he wouldnt hurt himself, and the bars on mine are further apart than that one. but now it works good and i put a basket underneath to catch the hay that falls. but it still goes everywhere when he gets restless and pulls it all out of the basket. heres a pic of what i bought

I cut a square in the center and put a cut peice of cardboard inside then put the hay in front so that it doesnt fall out the back.

I find hay in one end of the litter box works best for me.

i had one for Meadow. it was very hard to get the hay in, and even harder for her to get it out. she ended up eating very little hay for a short time b/c it was just too much work. what i did, was i popped off one half and just used it as a rolling bowl. it worked fine. hay still got everywhere.

I found this rolling hay ball to be the best solution for my bunny. I stuff it full enough that some long ends are poking out and it gives her lots to grab onto. As she pulls one piece out the rest usually follows. Sometimes the smaller bits still fall through – but with my current setup it falls between her litter box and the side wall of the plastic floor. So when the ball gets empty she shoves her little head into that space to clean up the fallen bits. It’s definitely the tidiest solution I’ve tried – and I’ve definitely tried a lot! I usually just don’t refill it until she cleans up her mess and then we’re both happy. Occasionally she manages to get the hinge door on the white part open where the hay gets shoved in – and then she gets really excited because she can stick her whole face in there and go to town! I just make sure that I hang it so that if the hinge door does come open it opens downwards and points towards the floor (as opposed to up towards the ceiling) – that way she has easy access and it can still spin around when the door is open (since she stands up and uses her paw to spin it down, like on the price is right). Hopefully that makes sense… But yes, I love this little hay holder. It also folds up quite compactly for travelling once it’s taken apart.

mine also love to stick their heads in and get good and buried in their hay which is another reason why i just was not satified with the ball. hay is such a vital part of their diet that i’d rather they have access to way more hay than they’ll ever eat in a day, than run the risk that they would run out. cleaning up the hay is a better outcome than not enough fiber, but everything is spotless.

this is from pre-Max… everyday (or twice a day) her hay ball would get topped off and she’d dig right in.  it was never too messy b/c the ball always rolled upright again.

I was wondering about that too.  Cool it works.  Ah the wheel of fortune  you ms bun just won a ball full of hay.

For ruby I found this wire thing looked like part of a bird cage door or something. I brought it home and bent it and tie wrapped it to the side of her cage. Works real good but hay falls out the back a little bit.

I haven’t found anything for Cotton to use tho.  This hay ball that could work. I just may go and try that.

I have this as a toy for my bun. I put treat hay in it mixed with timothy once a week so that it’s ‘special’ and worth her while to try to eat it. She normally manages to finish it off in about two days with treat hay and then I stuff it with plain timothy and that lasts about 5 more days. It’s hanging in her cage, and I’ve never had it any other way so I don’t know if it’s messy if it’s free to roll around. She has an unlimited supply of timothy in a tissue box next to/over her litter box, which is probably the same as far as mess, or maybe less, especially since it’s hanging over the litter box… I wouldn’t rely on the ball alone to give my bun enough hay unless I made sure it was super stuffed every day or open on one end.

I use this as a second hay holder for my buns- I just put the ball on the floor without the wire hanger thing and they love eating hay out of it- it makes a huge mess though as they roll it around!! They love it so much though that I don’t worry about it (it’s also only in their bunny area of the living room so it’s somewhat contained)
