OK it’s official (there was some haggling as their policy when a shelter helps them by taking an overflow, they *charge* them an adoption fee, and we just can’t pay for more rabbits…)

We’re going to Calgary to pick up five rabbits that would be euthanized! They’re getting scheduled for neuters next week and then we’re off to pick them up! Thank goodness gas prices have gone down-it’s about  three hour drive, not much but still will help my pockets!

Hooray!  Way to save the Calgarian bunnies (it’s just too bad they have to move to Edmonton, hehe)!  It’s only a 3 hour drive if you actually do the speed limit – when my Mom’s driving, we make great time going for Calgary to Edmonton!  Hopefully the weather’s good for you.  Where are you saving them from, are you allowed to mention that type of thing?

so you have to pay an adoption fee to take on their overflow?! or did you get around that? how weird. do all shelters do that?

We got around that….I was quite franky astounded by it, but apparently their policy?

And SUCCESS just helped someone keep their rabbit. They contacted me saying they were sort of interested in a new friend for thier rabbit as his friend had passed away. I helped with some bonding articles and told her whether she adopted from us or not, I would continue to support with suggestions/help as she went through bonding. This morphed into her saying she didn’t want the rabbit anymore as she didn’t want two and could we take him. I found out the other bun had passed away recently and was still grieving. I told her the best thing for him was not a shelter, but to stay with her and get help through grieving and suggested a stuffed toy. She ran out and got him one, he loves it, she’s keeping him. PHEW!!

I’m so glad to hear you are taking some of the buns!! Why would they be euthanized, just because they have too many?

…Apparently they have too many?? All our shelters in Edmonton are all no-kill (awesome but our strays go to the pound and if unclaimed are euthanized there instead so really not much better I guess). I’m happy we are saving them and they are going to be speutered first. I’m excited at the notion that we are already known in Calgary! I’m pumped for the roadtrip. I’m tired of rabbits being dumped…PLUS side I was able to counsel a lady this week into keeping her bun!

Hi Kokaneeandkahlua: I want to congratulate you on the fine and noble job you are doing. Your website is looking really good (radrabbits) and I really love the way you have a rating system in place for the adoptable bunnies. That’s the first thing that I would look at.
Also, I think it’s wonderful you can offer bonding service. Boy, I would have jumped on that if you had already been established when I was wanting to bond Munch and Amethyst.

As far as Calgary’s Humane Society, I recently spoke with someone I know (sort of) who works there. She confirmed that they are completely full of rabbits. No room. You know, it’s beyond me that they don’t allow more room for rabbits there. It’s a huge cement building and it appears to me that there is a lot of empty spaces.

I do wish it were a no kill shelter but unfortunately, it isn’t.

Soooo we’re back!! We have five new bunneehs too!

Dad phoned this morning to tell me I was not going to Calgary in MY car and either he would drive me in his truck (he won’t let me drive it….) OR I had to take Dave’s truck-it was freezing raining and weird weather all day; Anyways after some begging Dave let me take his truck. The roads in Edmonton were bad, but all the way there and back BONE DRY! LOL After all that! Anyways we got home safely and the buns are all tucked in. They’re a little miffed-four lops looking un-loppy with their disapproving-ness!

We have four white Red Eyed Whites with floppy ears-just adorable! Soo they are ‘Hocus” “Pocus” “Adabra” “Cadabra” ; We’re considering bonding them into two pairs since REW are hard to adopt anyways, they may be with us for some time; and as matching pairs already bonded that may make for some adoption apeal?
Our fifth is Tabatha-the ‘aggressive rabbit’ who apparently nipped during a vet exam She’s very not viscious although we were fine taking her even if she is-some rabbits are just aggressive and that’s fine with the *Right* owner.

Anyways they’re all tucked in and I’m tuckered out!!
