My rabbit, Ricky, was on our back screened porch playing. I went out there and saw blood in and out of his cage. He had apparently ripped his nail off when he was going in and out of the cage…and tracked blood all around. I brought him inside and while I held him, my husband used wet cold cloths on it, holding them on his front paw and applying gentle pressure to stop the bleeding. Ricky was upset, and a few times would pull away and shake his paw, shaking more blood. After a while he settled down, and when it seemed to have stopped bleeding, we held him a bit more, and then put him in his cage with some dinner, hoping he’d relax and de-stress. He is calm, and it seems to have stopped bleeding. I really hate to mess with him now…thinking it’s better for him to stay relaxed. What else should I do? I’m concerned about infection.

As long as it stays clean and dry then it should be ok. Just keep an eye on it. Anything you put on it will most likely get licked off I’m afraid. I’ve not seen but heard that nail injuries can look like alot of blood but it’s not as serious as it may appear. You can use styptic powder or pure cornstarch to stem the flow of blood. Handy to have on hand for nail trims if accidently taking off too much.

Make sure his habitat is clean and dry also.  If he’s acting like his normal bunny self, then this is all good. :o)

Markbun said in your other thread:
“Nothing else you can do about it. Sometimes it happens – your best bet to try and keep the risk down though is to keep the nails trimmed. Bun will be fine.”

I deleted your duplicate thread in the welcome section. This section is where questions like this should be posted, and since you already posted it here, I just deleted the other and copy/pasted Mark’s response.

I was confused when I first put the question up! I’m new at this. Thanks for your responses. I have trimmed Ricky’s nails, and the bleeding did stop. He seems fine, now…but I will keep those nails trimmed better from now on! It really scared me.

This happened to me when Ani was playing in the Kitchen and spooked herself on the laminate flooring, I think she ripped a nail on teh dogs food dish or part of the door, it was hard to tell.
I washed it up, stopped the bleedign with corn starch. I took a look at it everyday and made sure to keep her cage and litter box spotless. We never had an issue, it healed up and grew back fine

Oh gosh I can see how that would be scary-I’ve quicked my bun before and boy was I feeling awful. But yeah-just like everyone said-keep the area really clean and it should be fine. Try to keep an eye on it-every day or so, so that you’ll see quickly if it starts to get infected.
