I just can not decide whether to get oxbow tablet papaya!!  Ive used Sunseed dried papaya forever but we are out and so its time for some thinking.. what do you use, and why?

Is one better than the other?  Previously nobody knew any pro or con to use one or the other, does anyone know now?

        THANKS!

I am not familiar with the Sunseed dried papaya. We’ve always used the Oxbow brand. They did change their tablets (what? about a year or so ago?) and NOT ALL BUNS like them now. My buns like them just fine. They get one a day approximately.

If you want it in a dried form, you may have better luck going to a health food store and getting a natural, sugar-free type.

It seems the Vitakraft Sunseed site is under construction and I cannot find nutritional info. Do you happen to still have the package and can post what is in it?

I believe Sweet Meadow Farms also makes dried papaya for buns. It is sugar free and only contains 100% papaya. My bun loooves this, but I haven’t tried giving him the tablets because I don’t find them in stores and haven’t bothered to order online.

I’m also curious if the dried papaya has the same good effects of the tablets. Though I’m still unconvinced that it has any benefit, as I hear conflicting info.

I feel the same way as Elrohwen – there is not scientific evidence from what I understand that papaya enzymes actually help with digestion. Hay is really the key to keeping the gut moving and preventing blockages.

I use mine as a treat.

Sarita, I agree that I use it as a treat too. It’s healthier than craisins with sugar added and he loves it, so I figure if he’s getting some additional gut help that would just be an additional bonus.

Yes agreed I use papaya as a treat.

Really I don’t think there is much difference between papaya fresh or dried.
The reason oxbow papaya treats are popular is not only are they loved by bunnies but they are really low calorie and they have fibre-so it’s quite healthy. I’d totally give the oxbow tablets a try Mine love them (But don’t try them yourself-one of our members did…they taste like vinegar I believe… )

Feeona, papaya has enyzme called papin, it’s said to aid in digestion of protein.  Pineapple has bromelin that is similar.   I’m not convinced on it’s benefits too.  I don’t think it actually breaks down hair.  I’ve read it more so helps dissolve the stuff that has ingested hair clumped together in the gut -   so it could be beneficial in that respect.

Bah that was me! They just smell pretty good so I was wondering if they tasted as good as they smelled… well I found out didn’t I? They are very dry and yucky and just taste horrible, I don’t recall them tasting like vinegar, but I wouldn’t doubt that someone else on this forum has tried them as well, they do smell scrumptious after all.

I just use my papaya tablets as a treat, I don’t really believe that they help the hair go through your bun, or aid in digestion.
