I just found out about Penelopads, they are reusable litter box liners, and I was wondering if anyone has had experiences with anything of the sort? I use up multiple paper bags as liners each time I set up my bunnies’ litter boxes and a reusable option sounds super great, but I’m not sure how well it would go. I sew a ton of Louie and Lola’s things, I’ve sewn a little runner that velcroes to the windowsill so they don’t slip while running across, and I’ve sewn some mats and a cover for an old wire shelf that now functions as a two-level hideout. I’ve also sewn Louie’s xpen liner and a large thick mat I use to cover the main area of the floor not covered by a rug so the bunnies have more non-slippery play space. I’ll add some pictures tomorrow, I don’t have any on hand right now and it’s late. Anyways, I feel bad wasting so much paper even though I’m technically reusing? Does anybody have proof these work well as liners? I’d love to give them a try, and they’d be helpful for sticking inside travel carriers too.

I don’t use liners at all, the most sustainable option! :p

I also do not line my litterboxes since they are pretty easily cleaned with a quick spray of vinegar-water. If a resuable liner was a suitable alternative for litter in general, that’d be awesome, but that’s definitely not the case, haha.

I do have other ways I try to reduce waste in my general rabbit-litter routine. I have a set of towels specific to litterbox cleaning (cleaning the grate and bottom) and then a cloth-diaper laundry bag they go in so I can wash them, This was in response to be going through so many paper towels during cleaning.

Thanks! I do use rags to clean, I just find it easier than paper towels, so I’ll probably try out some reusable liners, if both rabbits use the same litter box once they’re bonded, I probably won’t use a liner and just clean the whole thing every day.

I don’t use a liner either, I just use hay to scrub/wipe most days when I am just doing spot cleaning. I have a grubby wash cloth for deeper cleaning too. Basically just layer of Yesterdays news and the layer of hay, which I spot clean every other day unless someones been very busy. He has two boxes, actually 3 as I just got him one for deck, so it gives me more wiggle room, I just toss the soiled hay and litter in a paper shopping bag and when that’s full throw the lot in the compost. Every other week or more often if it seems like it needs it, I toss the whole thing and give it a serious scrub with some mild soap and hot water, and let it air dry in the sun or use an old rag to dry. I did use paper liners in the beginning, but found if anything they made the whole thing messier and harder to clean. Made it smell worse too, but that could have been my experience.

I guess I am still wasting the paper bag in the intermediary step, may think up a less wasteful method, but for a while had an over abundance of grocery bags as stores weren’t letting you bring your own. (The still don’t, but now I have them just stick it back in the basket and then bag it outside).
