Hello. My rabbit stopped eating and drinking yesterday evening and was taken to the vet this afternoon. Our vet determined that he has a respiratory infection. He’s on antibiotics but I’m wondering what else I can do for him. I’ve been feeding him a food puree and giving him water with a syringe. He’s in a clean and warm space and has been resting since our visit with the vet. He’s clearly in a lot of pain. It’s breaking my heart to see him sick and I want to do all I can for him. Thank you for your time and advice!

When my bunny Bam had a lower respiratory infection he was prescribed Bactrim for two weeks, plus metacam, ranitidine (zantac) and bricanyl.

Bactrim is an antibiotic. Metacam is for pain and inflammation, ranitidine protects the tummy from the metacam which can be hard on the tummy and also works as a gut motility drug, bricanyl is a broncodilator that helps the bun get more air in and out of the lungs. The bricanyl I got was pills that I had to crush and add water to and feed in a syringe. My bun got completely well from this treatment protocol.

These meds except the zantac are prescription only. So you’d need to contact your vet again to get them. I got them from a bunny savvy vet. I have the dosages written down if you want them, just send me a PM.

Unfortunately, Attila died in middle of the night. I suspect there was problems with his breeding and that’s why he succumbed so quickly. Thank you for the advice though.

I’m so very sorry that he didn’t make it.
