Alright I’m not sure if this will even happen anytime soon, but for the past 6 months my parents have been talking about eventually moving to Alberta, Canada. Probably not for a year or two. Anyways, I was looking for bunny rescues in Alberta, but could only find KK’s! I found two ferret rescues, both based in Edmonton and Leslie’s (KK) bunny rescue in Edmonton. Anyone know of anymore rescues?
Bigsis7, How do you feel about moving there? I moved a lot growing up (and as an adult too actually) so I understand what that’s like.
Here’s a website I found: http://www.nasap.ca/ called the Northern Alberta Society for Animal Protection. Maybe KK has heard of them.
Thanks for the link Pam!!
To tell you the truth, when we moved to VA I knew we were going to move again. We didn’t know when we would, but the plan was that we were going to move after 1-2 years. It’s been almost 4. So for about 2 years I haven’t known if we were going to move in a few months or if we still had a few years. That was hard. I moved cross country…2 or 3 times, lived in 15 different houses (most from when I was a baby to 5 years old), and been or driven thru 31 states. So if we move to Canada I don’t think it’ll be super hard anymore since I’ve had to prepare myself for that possiblity for years. My mom’s whole family lives there and most of my dad’s. I’m homeschooling until 9th grade (possibly after that), so I’ll have time to adjust. I’ll miss my friends terribly and I’ll miss the city, but this move feels right.
It was hard for me to make friends this time around. I was so scared I would make friends and then have to leave again. I did make friends, then I got to middle school. I was the new kid all over again. That’s part of the reason I started homeschooling. I keep in touch with my best friends, of course, but it’s easier for me to have a few good friends than to have to make friends again and again, then have to leave. If possible, I’ll most likely be moving back here either for college or after. Who knows, though!
Anyways sorry for writing a book!!
No, don’t be sorry, that’s why I asked. I think you have adjusted beautifully from the sound of it. I hadn’t moved nearly that much. I think you discover that you learn how to make friends more easily, but I agree that you are reluctant to make more than a few good ones because of the probability of leaving. To this day I have my best friends in several states – none of them here where I live. (More time on BB since I don’t have many new friends to play with.)
Very glad to hear you have a good feeling about the Canada move. That makes a favorable difference. Now that you have a strong interest in helping out at shelters you will have a common interest with new people and that will feel good to you as well.
I hate to be the one to bring up the negative, but where are you guys going in Canada? Will the dog be able to go? There’s lots of BSL there. :0(
We’re not even sure if we are going. This is a probably. But if we do move to Canada it’ll be Southern Alberta (pit bulls are illegal in Ontario!). The ferrets and the dog are definently coming with us! I can’t imagine leaving them behind! My mum and everyone are to attatched to Beau and my parents know if the ferrets don’t come I don’t. Even though I do live under their roof, but if I was forced to find them homes, my parents would get the silent treatmen for a LONG time. So they’re not taking their chances ;], lol!
Canada does seem to have some ridiculous laws. Rats are illegal in Alberta, because they’re “destructive”. If any small animal was set free they’d be destructive, too! Then pit bulls and amstaff’s are illegal in Ontario, because they can’t control who owns them and who doesn’t if they’re not illegal. Just to name a couple of their stupid laws
!
It’s now a “for sure” thing. We are moving to Alberta, Canada the end of July.
North American Society for Animal Protection http://www.nasap.ca
Edmonton Humane Society http://www.edmontonhumanesociety.com
Calgary Humane Society http://www.calgaryhumane.ca
are the only three other shelters that have anything other then cats and dogs-there are MANY shelters in the Edmonton area for dogs/cats or specific to cats or dogs;
There’s lots of BSL there. :0(
TARM what’s BSL??
Breed specific legislation. Shayna’s dog is a Pit Bull.
So are you guys excited about the move? That’s not very far away. Are you packing yet? lol![]()
Thanks KK! Man only 3? I know there are two ferret rescues, one in Edmonton one in Calgary.
Kristie, Well…I’m somewhat excited about this move. There are good things and bad things as with all places. For instance, we may be stuck in a TINY house for a year or two and there aren’t many rescues up there. A good thing is that we will be with my Grandma who has lived by herself for the last 5 years. No one has really come to see her for the past 3 years. She spent her whole life helping other people and doesn’t have anyone to help her. Basically we’re trading finances for family.
Haha not far at all :-P! I hate long trips and this will be a 5-6 day trip if we drive 8 hours a day. Not packing yet, but we’ll start packing some stuff soon. Plus we’re going to have our FIRST garage sale the end of this month. Probably another one or two after that, lol! One thing I’m worried about with the area we will be moving to, is that I can’t seem to find ANY ferret vets where we’ll be (Lethbridge). The closest one is 2 hours away. I have a friend who is looking for me though as she lives close to where I’ll be.
Ahhhh BSL-There aren’t laws disallowing pitbulls but in Edmonton you have to pay a HUGE liscencing fee (I think 1000$ a year) and walk only with a muzzle on
Here’s the dog bylaws in Lethbridge. It sounds like they don’t classify certain breeds as aggressive but they can declare a dog as aggressive for actions
http://www.lethbridge.ca/NR/rdonlyres/6D1A…/5235Y.pdf
“Aggressive Dog
2. In this bylaw:
a) “
” means any dog, whatever its age, whether on public or
private property which has:
(i) caused the demise of a person; or
(ii) without provocation caused the demise of a domestic animal while off
the property of the property owner; or
(iii) Without provocation, chased, injured or bitten a person or any other
domestic animal; or
(iv) Without provocation, threatened or created the reasonable
apprehension of a threat to a person or to any other domestic animal;
or
(v) Without provocation, damaged or destroyed any public or private
property; or
(vi) Which represents a continuing threat of serious harm to persons or
animals.
