When I dropped off Maryann and Dono at SaveABunny, I saw this fella in with a group of other buns:
He’s a baby flemish giant that had a very bad off left hind leg. After being turned over, Marcy had the leg amputated. He had been living in pain most of his life and when I saw him, he looked like he just wanted to die. But one of Marcy’s sanctuary buns, Hopscotch, was grooming him like mad and another was snuggled up next to him. But he still looked very depressed.
Now, skip to my return 6 days later to pick up my guys, and here’s Little Joe hopping around, his HUGE ears up and alert, checking everything out and acting VERY bunnylike. Once again, Marcy has taken a bun whose life was all but given up on and turned him around into a loving pet.
I hope y’all don’t get bored of hearing these stories. It just still amazes me to this day what she is able to do with the buns she finds. Oh, and if anyone would like to adopt him, or a couple of other, full grown flemish giants (only one has a pic thus far though), they’re ready at SaveABunny. You can click on any of their pics below to go to their pages:
Little Joe
Hoss Giddy’up
There’s also “Gunsmoke” who is a gray Flemish Giant who is also quite a character.
Marcee is amazing!
What beautiful rabbits – I’m sure she will be able to easily place them in loving homes too.
aw they’re so sweet! does little Joe have multi-colored skin? why is the skin speckled like that? and he can hop around okay? amazing.
no, i never get tired of hearing these stories… keep ’em coming Markus!
Hoss is such a cutie too, i love his coloring. he looks like he kinda has north america on him… i can see mexico and the lower US, florida is missing tho… lmao!
Though the stories can be heart wrenching, it is amazing to hear of rabbits overcoming these events. Especially when we’re talking about an animal that can fall ill over the slightest change in the diet etc. I was reading of a bun at a rescue more local to me, that was recovering from burns from boiling water. It bears not to think about the “how?” too much!! I was heartened to read that this bun is still healing yet displays a socialness and affectionate nature you wouldn’t expect from one that has been mistreated! At the end of the day, the stories are hope-filled, so personally, I can deal with reading more of ’em!
I’m certainly not bored, I love hearing good stories like this-warms the heart
He looks exactly like our shelter bunny Pacino!
Here are some updated photos of Lil’ Joe with his new friends. You can see how much happier he is:

Oh what adorables! *gasp* Fleeeemmmmieeeeeez! I love Flemmies! ^_^
lolz…Look at little Scooter there! You can almost hear him saying, “Get off, you’re crushing my brownies!” Lmao!
Marcy is most definitely THE Bunny Whisperer. She has been an angel to more than a few that I have seen you speak of here. I am in awe! ![]()
If I lived closer i would adopt him i’ve been looking for a flemish giant and joe looks like he has had a tough start and needs to be spoiled and treated like a king for the rest of his life
What a great story it is……..it’s so funny that I got Lily on an impulse….then I added Jester. I’d have more buns if I could. They sure hold a special place in my heart now. I would have never imagined myself being a bunny owner- now I can’t imagine NOT having one(some) hehe.
I love the photos and stories of these buns! They are all so precious! They seem to know just what the other needs. Marcy sounds like an angel too!!! ![]()
I wonder if anyone around Phoenix, AZ holds bonding classes. I am going to check it out!
As one of our fosterers said once about the three legged bunny she was fostering, there is nothing wrong with him, he has all 3 of his legs. Luckily for them, bunnies do not think about missing a leg or an eye, and they are usually very resilient and can put their past mistreatment behind them.
People like Marcy, and Auntie Heather, and Margo at HRS really can work magic with these bunnies.
Yay…happy ending for little bunny!!!!!
Hey! How did she get all those bunnies to snuggle up and be nice to each other???I wanna do that with my four!!!
Well first, Marcy who runs SaveABunny is one of those rare bunny-whisperers. She, and her people, can perform ‘miracles’ when it comes to bonding (at least I think so) and she has good reads of rabbits and who they’d like – both other rabbits as well as people. Yes, at SaveABunny it is more of her bringing in humans to match up with her rabbits than the other way around.
Second, Scooter is the ‘MC’ of SaveABunny. He feels that he is in charge of all of the other buns and needs to look out for them. He herds blind rabbits towards food and away from furniture. If he gets out of his cage, he inspects all the other cages to make sure everything is OK. As far as bonding goes, he gets along with every rabbit (being the overseer that he is). And, as you can tell by the pics, he is just fine with being dog-piled on as long as it means everyone is happy.
Haha look at Scooter squished. That’s so cute. It’s so good that Little Joe is happy now! I don’t think bunnies have the cognition to realize each step in their pain… even people can’t remember pain accurately. It’s great that someone was able to recognize that he’d be so much happier without pain and without the leg.
I just found out that last week Little Joe was called by the Black Rabbit. He died unexpentantly but was with Marcy and Rob during his last hours. The cause of death is unknown at this time. His extended family in the photos above are mourning his loss.
I find it hard to be sad at times like this though. Little Joe was a bunny that wasn’t suppose to have lived. He was from a breeder who couldn’t care for his absecesses on his back leg. It was amputated and he was put into a loving group for over half a year where he received more love than many buns ever get in a decade. I feel that he experienced the best of what life had to offer and headed over the rainbow bridge so that he could binky with the best of them.
He taught me the horrors that are out there and what strength with love can accomplish. He’ll be missed.
I’m sorry to hear this, Markus. But I do know what you mean. Thank God Little Joe had the time and the chance to realize that love was there for him, and that he could cross over in the arms of those who cared for him.
Bless this bunny, Lord. Binky free Little Joe, whole and healthy again.
Yes, that his later life was spent with companionship was a blessing. Binky Free Little Joe!
Aww he looks so happy now!!! I could never do what she does, I would get way to deppressed. She’s an amazing kind of person!
