Relocating the nest for baby safety

Hi All,

Hope someone can answer my question.

As many of you know I have an accidental litter, the Bunny Bungalow Pepper and Piglet reside in was never designed for a family as the top story is very high and the ramp steep. Some of the babies have already managed to make it to the ground floor when Pepper has closed the milkbar to quickly and departed the nest. Due to lots of straw and soft toys they had soft landings and were kept warm especially if Piglet found them (he would sit by them until I could put them back in the nest) I want to take the nest out of the sleeping box and place it on the downstairs level, the weather here is very warm at the moment and I can cover part of the downstairs so they do not get a breeze from the aircooler. They are already 10 days old and all thriving. I know Pepper will probably not be pleased but I do not want the babies harmed by falling. Barriers don’t help as when they are attached to Peppers teet they go where she goes.

Will Pepper desert them if I move the nest ?

Have you separated the male from the female yet? Rabbits can make babies again very quickly after the female has given birth. I do not think she will abandon the babies if you move the nest to the lower level.

Piglet was neutred a few weeks ago. I am hoping that the time they were apart was sufficient as I did not know until recently his sperm could live for weeks. The site I originally checked for aftercare said I only needed to separate for 10 days. I have watched him and he doesn’t seem to have any interest beside binkying and eating and a close snorgle when the sun goes down. He is very good with the babies and has protected some that made it to the lower level.

Oh okay, I have heard the sperm can be viable for up to a month after neutering. He seems to be okay though

Hi Roberta, I agree with Bunnyfriend, moving the nest to the lower level should be fine. As long as its within mums comfort zone

Should be fine. Keep an eye on them just in case
