Reglan Syrup dosage

 Hello,

I’m iced in today, so I can’t take my bunny to the vet. One of my three bunnies has small, hard droppings. She’s been a little picky about what she eats lately, and she hasn’t been wanting to eat her hay. She’s elderly (just turned 10), so she only gets about 20-25 pellets per day. I eliminated those three days ago because she wasn’t eating all of her veggies. Yesterday I noticed the small droppings. She’s still eating all her veggies, just not all at once.

I’ve used Reglan in the past for one of my other bunnies when he would not eat. I want to give some to her, but I’m not sure of the dosage. Can someone tell me the correct dosage in cc’s for the syrup version? My big bunny (he was about six pounds) got 2 cc’s. She’s only about 3.5 (I will weigh her before I give her the meds to make sure), but I want to be sure that approximately 1 cc would be appropriate for her.

Also, is it okay to give her a little Metacam along with the Reglan? She looks like she’s not feeling well.

Hi Debbie, I would call the vet to see if this is recommended – explain you cannot get out today and you are concerned and see if they can dose over the phone if they feel this is appropriate. Hopefully someone is in the vet’s office that can help you until you can get to them when the weather is better.

Also if you have any critical care you might start hand feeding her. It’s so stressful when you cannot get to the vet and one of your bunnies is sick!

 Thanks for the responses! I got a hold of my vet (they were closed part of today because of the ice), but he called me back a bit ago. Turns out my meds were old. My rabbit vet is 1.5 hours away, so that wasn’t a possibility. I got lucky though. There is a horse/dog vet about a mile from me. They were nice enough to call my vet and get a new prescription for me, so I have new Reglan syrup for my little girl. She just had her first dose.

The doc said he wasn’t really worried yet since she was still eating and producing pellets. He told me to keep an eye on her and make sure she’s producing at least 30 or more of these hard pellets. So, I feel a little better. I’m supposed to keep a close watch on how many droppings she’s producing and offering her leafy greens.

Thanks again for the well wishes for my little girl. She’s 10 years old and this is the the first time she’s ever been sick. Until now, it’s only been my male bunnies that have had issues.

 Thank you. She’s definitely very special. I lost her male bunny buddy last year just before he turned nine, and I cried for weeks. I was so excited that she turned 10 last month that every one in my office knew that my bunny was turning ten. 🙂 Since this is the first time she’s had any trouble, it has me a little worried, but she’s already a little perkier than usual. I read somewhere that banana is good and mushy in their little tummies when they don’t eat. She had never eaten any before (and I offered her a little piece on her birthday), but she ate a little today. It took about four hours before she would touch it, but I think she was happy about it because she was running around and jumping!

I am glad that you were able to talk to your vet- it is important to check with your vet before starting any medications.  Some medications could make a problem worse- like Cisapride in case of a true blockage could cause rupture- and Metacam can affect the GI system too.

She sounds wonderful. It’s so great you’ve had a happy, healthy bunny for 10 years.
The running and jumping now is a very good sign. I was concerned at first that your old medicine might be expired, so I really like the sound of the vets you got in touch with who helped out with it over the phone. I wish more people would just call their vet with a concern, since often it isn’t urgent and a home remedy or a perscription for a well-known bunny can be handled via phone or email. I’m not recommending vets stop seeing patients, but some questions just require reassurance or a “try this first, then call me back if it’s not better” response that gets bunny on the road to recovery and doesn’t warrent a visit. Many things literally just pass.

 You’re right…it’s definitely better to have the reassurance of the doctor. He also told me something that I didn’t know…that it will take a couple weeks for her droppings to get back to normal. That’s good to know because I would have freaked out otherwise.  She’s eating a lot better now, even though they are still small. I’ve also discovered that the little rascal LOVES those carrots you get for babies. It was suggested to me that something like that would be good to moisten her tummy. I’ve been giving her a small amount at morning at night. You would think I was bringing in a carrot truck!  Doesn’t like the pineapple juice that someone suggested though, so the only way that can do down is via the syringe. I hate to do that, but she’s so much perkier though. I hope that means she’s getting better. Thank you and everyone else for all of the comments. When any of my pets get sick, I start to feel worried and all alone. It’s so nice to have a place like this where people care so much about animals (like I do) and offer good advice.

It’s easy to 2nd guess yourself when they’re unwell, I know! Congratulations on having a healthy 10yr old. It’s good to hear she’s come thru this recent gut slowdown so well.

Hoping she feels better soon. I have an 8-1/2 year old girl I’m coddling through a stasis myself right now. It gets more worrisome when they are senior buns. I didn’t know the part about it taking a couple of weeks for poops to get normal. I’m keeping an eye on the poops quite closely!

One thing that helps my sweeties when their tummies are bothering them is to snuggle with me in a blanket or towel that I’ve warmed in the microwave or with a heating pad – check to make sure there aren’t any too-hot spots, but the warmth comforts and relaxes them. It also comforts me to comfort my furry babies; calms those nerves and worries.

Hoping we both have good news to report on our buns’ recoveries really soon!
